Online and Virtual Assistance

Students and families need connectivity to participate safely and responsibly in today’s online world. Here’s how AT&T is helping bridge the “digital divide” between people who can take advantage of all the internet has to offer, and those who can’t.

Skills

  • Digital Navigators are being trained across the country to help communities join the online world by providing support for at-home connectivity, computers, and digital skills.

With the Public Library Association, we’re developing resources and workshops to raise awareness of Federal Broadband Benefits and improve digital skills.

Learn more about AT&T’s work to help manage families’ online experience.

Value

  • Many people without internet at home overlook the benefits of signing up. But increasingly, connectivity provides access to essential services and opens a world of resources that can support learning. That's why AT&T created The Achievery, an innovative and free educational platform which offers standards-aligned curriculum and entertaining videos for K-12 students everywhere they learn – at home, in the community or in their classrooms.

San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) and the City of San Antonio’s Department of Human Services (DHS) are piloting a new free device lending program aimed at improving digital literacy and fostering connection.

The Device Lending Program for Older Adults will allow Bexar County residents ages 60 years or older to check out a free iPad from one of five DHS-managed senior centers throughout the city. Borrowers can keep the device at home for up to six months to help them connect with friends and family, browse the internet, connect with a health care provider, engage in leisure activities, and use mobile apps.

A personal internet connection is not required as the devices will come with a free wireless cellular connection to access the internet.

“San Antonio Public Library is committed to bridging the digital divide for everyone in San Antonio,” said Ramiro S. Salazar, Director, San Antonio Public Library. “This program underscores the Library’s dedication to equipping older adults not only with vital 21st century resources, but also to services that connect them with friends, family, and loved ones in new and meaningful ways.”

Among the many benefits of using a digital device, borrowers will be able to access millions of digital resources available through SAPL including eBooks, eAudiobooks, music, movies, and online databases.

For more information, call 210-207-2500 or chat with library staff at ask.mysapl.org. For information on other library programs and services, visit mysapl.org.

Devices will be available for check-out beginning October 5 from these DHS senior centers:

  • Normoyle Senior Center, 700 Culberson, 78211
  • West End Park Senior Center, 1226 N.W. 18th St., 78207
  • District 2 Senior Center, 1751 S. W.W. White Road, 78220
  • Southside Lions Senior Center, 3303 Pecan Valley Drive, 78210
  • District 5 Senior Center, 2701 S. Presa, 78210

A San Antonio Public Library card is required to check out a device, and SAPL staff can help those interested in the program sign up for a free library account. Anyone who borrows an iPad will have access to free tech support and training opportunities from program partners AARP Senior Planet, OATS and OASIS to help users get the most out of their borrowed device.

We have innovative technologies that assist visually impaired patrons in utilizing the digital programs we offer.

For use outside of the library:

  • iPads are available for check out for up to six weeks. These iPads are capable of using Siri, and have a VoiceOver function to open up the apps we offer, such as Hoopla (music, movies, audiobooks), Mango Languages, or cloudLibrary (ebooks and audiobooks).

For use within the library:

  • Focus 40 Blue Wireless Braille Display, which connects to computers, iPads, and phones using Bluetooth, allowing navigation through documents and applications using the latest Braille technology.
  • The Braille Display also converts text to both contracted braille and un-contracted braille. This text is displayed on a Perkins-style keyboard, which makes it simple to read, as it follows along, mirroring word for word at your own pace.
  • The Pearl Portable Reading Solution is essentially a camera on a folding post, which brings visually impaired patrons convenient portable access to any reading material they bring to BiblioTech. The folding camera opens easily and connects to a PC using a USB port, and works with OpenBook Software.
  • OpenBook software takes an exact picture of the material, whether it be a book, a newspaper, or a magazine, using the Pearl Portable Reading Solution. It mirrors the image using the Pearl Scanner and reads aloud word for word. OpenBook will adjust the speed and tone of the reader, as well as the size, fonts, and color of the text to make your reading experience more comfortable.

Additionally, we provide:

  • Magic Large Print Keyboard, with much larger keys than a standard keyboard.
  • JAWS (Job Access With Speech) software, which is a screen reader for Windows that works with most computer applications.
  • Magic Zoom, which magnifies the screen so you can zoom in to the desired screen size. Each innovative tool comes with its very own braille instructions, which are available to patrons upon request.

Communities In Schools programs surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Our evidence-based approach, adapted to meet each community’s unique needs, is the basis for our success.

Basic Needs: A student cannot focus in the classroom if he or she is hungry, cold or tired, or cannot see the board. Site coordinators see to it that students' basic needs are met each day.

Enrichment: Our Site coordinators enroll students in a wide variety of after-school and summer programs, field trips and youth conferences to help them gain experience that is essential to meeting college and career goals.

Academic Assistance: Our site coordinators work hard to ensure that students have the resources to progress academically. From providing students with tutors to finding and creating quiet spaces where students can study, we do whatever it takes to create an optimal learning environment for our students.

Life Skills: Through one-on-one workshops, team building, and guest speakers, we work with students to develop social-emotional learning, character education, social skills building, and conflict resolution.

Behavioral Interventions: Many of our students face and overcome difficult obstacles in their lives. However, their survival skills aren’t always effective in the classroom or in the workplace. Our program teaches students positive ways to cope with anger, conflict resolution, and other strategies to keep them focused on school.

Family Engagement: Site coordinators connect families with counselors and social workers to make sure that home is a healthy, nurturing environment where a student can feel safe.
