Volunteer CJCGC Jail Outreach Coaches meet in weekly, two-hour sessions with women and men (seperate sessions) incarcerated in the Gillespie County Jail.

Our outreach empowers voluntary participants to better understand themselves and others in preparation for life after their sentences are completed. Topics covered include understanding temperament and personalities with the use of assessments. Anger management and communication curriculum are also used to practice and prepare for success after jail or if sentenced to prison.

Vocational discovery and planning is utilized to develop and inform career paths needed to achieve individual goals.

Participants also enjoy time to build community together through worship and discussion.

Finally, the value of each participant and his or her own experiences are nurtured through each writing an autobiography.

The 3H Youth Ranch uses the power of nature as a tool to build new purposes, strengthen character, and engender personal integrity in young men. The balance of wilderness experiences such as camping, coupled with classroom and vocational education, creates a positive environment for boys to grow emotionally, intellectually, and physically. The treatment program is based on the aims and ideals of Scouting.

The atmosphere is safe, structured, and supervised by a trained team of professionals and promotes acceptance of authority, responsibility for personal actions, and skills building. Each youth has an individualized treatment plan designed to ensure success upon return to his family and community.

All boys attend school on-site provided by the University of Texas Charter School System. Upon placement, each boy is assessed and placed at his level of need. We have exceptional educators who work individually and collectively to inspire each boy to reach his full potential.

No one wades a stream without getting wet, and no one comes back from war unchanged. This is a toughening process for some people – a self-awareness generation engine. The efforts of our troops may produce internal struggles, but those efforts also produce tested, accomplished people.

Sometimes, people need a hand in slowing the internal disquiet and conflict that combat, deployment, military sexual trauma, or other abnormal situations produce. No one is better prepared to speak with a Veteran about her experiences than another Veteran, a peer.

With the peer-to-peer network, veterans go through a training course that teaches them how to facilitate groups of veterans. Once trained, they go out into their local communities and create peer groups. Because members of the group set the rules, no two peer groups are the same."- www.milvetpeer.net

We offer basic training for peers to establish a basic understanding of the MVPN network.

Additional training is provided to peers throughout the year. Our groups meet with peers with similar experiences and struggles in a safe, comfortable space. These groups are led by trained group facilitators who are advanced enough in their recovery journey to help you navigate your recovery with coping skills and confidence.

Our staff, volunteers, and partner organizations are here to make sure you get connected to the resources you need. We also have community events yearly to promote camaraderie, awareness, and fun. We can't wait for you to join us!

Ramp Building Volunteers:

If you’d like to become involved in the building of ramps for our clients, either as an individual or a group, please contact us with a note of your interest to [email protected] or fill out the volunteer request form and we’ll make sure the right person/city/county receives your message. Some regions have more detailed volunteer information and build schedules online.

Other Volunteer Opportunities:

In addition to the actual building, we have other important things that need to get done in order for us to achieve our objectives. If you would be interested in helping with activities such as administration, marketing, information technology, grant writing, etc. Please send an email to [email protected].

Volunteers are needed in all of the regions we serve:

San Antonio Central - Most of Bexar, Karnes, and Wilson Counties

San Antonio South - Southernmost Bexar County and Atascosa, Frio, and Medina Counties

San Antonio Northeast - Comal and Guadalupe Counties

San Antonio Northwest - Bandera, Gillespie, Kendall, and Kerr Counties

  • Plan on staying until the ramp is finished. Some ramps take longer than others due to size, complexity, and amount of on-site customization. If you must leave at a certain time, please make this known at the warehouse as ramp assignments are being made. On average, ramps are finished by 2:00 PM but that is not a guarantee.
  • Be prepared for safe construction work – flip flops or similar shoes are unsafe and should not be worn. We also need to have at least two adults able to use an electric drill/screwdriver and assist other volunteers.
  • Bring drills (at least one for every two people), work gloves, lunch (or snacks) and plenty of water.
  • We’re sorry, but insurance prevents us from allowing kids under the age of 16 on the build site.  We also ask that there be at least two adult supervisors at the site (in case one has to leave and take someone somewhere, there would still be a supervisor on site for the remainder of the minors.  We do, however, have painting opportunities that might be suitable for kids 12 and older.
  • We cannot transport minors to/from the site.

These commandments that I give you today are to upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

DEUTERONOMY 6:6-7 NIV

As a Mentor Father to an abandoned boy, you have entered upon “holy ground” where God, your Heavenly Father, promises to be your Guide and Counselor. He will give you wisdom and understanding to impart to this young boy godly wisdom and life-changing strategies to overcome his difficult family situation.

The Life Journey curriculum that Fathers in the Field has developed will greatly assist you in this journey with your Field Buddy as you introduce him to his Heavenly Father.

The Diaconate

The Diaconate is the most natural oversight body for Fathers in the Field in the local church. This ministry will challenge the Diaconate to take an active mercy role in the local community.

If your Diaconate is too focused on looking inward, then it will need to be awakened to the crying needs of single moms and abandoned boys in your community. Sadly, the stereotypical role of the deacon is oversight of finances, setting up chairs, passing out bulletins, taking up offerings, and other property needs.

While these are necessary activities, they do not go to the biblical core rationale for the Office of the Diaconate. This office of the church was originally established as a servant ministry to take care of widows and orphans in their distress (Acts 6). Fathers in the Field is a wonderful way to renew the vision of the Deacons and return them to their biblical mandate.

Women's Ministry

Engaging the women in the church is a crucial aspect of Fathers in the Field. Due to the sensitive nature of a Mentor Father relating to a single mom, it is important to have a woman to liaise with the mom and guard against the potential pitfalls of impropriety. Not only that, but women also offer invaluable insights into the needs of a single mom and the challenges that she faces. They are “wired” differently than men and think of things that men would never come up with.

One example is that our women’s Bible study collected money to give to the Field Buddies (under the Mentor Father’s supervision) to buy their mothers flowers for Mother’s Day.

As Christ’s Church, we must not stand idly by and let Satan destroy the next generation of our boys.

How does God require us, His people, to defend the cause of the fatherless and the widow? Has God changed His standard measurement of love for those of us who live in the New Testament Church Age? Does He still require us to show mercy and compassion to the fatherless and widow? How do the fatherless become part of the Church Family?

Jesus Himself answered these questions very loudly in the affirmative. He came proclaiming the truth of the Gospel through his teaching ministry and ministry of compassion to the sick and the disenfranchised. James, Jesus’ brother, also answers these questions unequivocally in James 1:27:

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after the orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

There is no wriggle room here-Christ’s Church must respond. If we don’t, God will judge us.

If we don’t, who will?

The development of an extended church family that will rally around the fatherless boy and his family is a vital component of the whole ministry. We desire to demonstrate to the single mother that she is not alone in her struggle to raise a family by herself and that the fatherless boy has many “uncles” and “grandfathers” who will model for him what it means to be a godly man in this world.

The deacons and women of the church will give support to the single mom as well as the boy. But this component of the ministry is not just for the abandoned boy and his mom. Because the negative impact upon abandoned girls is just as profound, we desire that the local church ministers to the whole family. Fathers in the Field mobilizes the local church into kingdom work and awakens it to the crying needs of abandoned boys and single moms in their community.

Lend a hand, it's appreciated! Volunteers provide much needed assistance to our military families and veterans.

At our Fisher Houses, volunteer opportunities include: bringing in meals and snacks for residents, helping with general housekeeping chores, organizing goods drives such as paper product drives, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, etc. Also, there are often young mothers and fathers in the homes who may feel overwhelmed, our volunteers offer babysitting services and help play with the children to give the parents a break and some quiet time.

During the holidays we often have volunteers who will help with decorating, children's toy drives, and gifts for those staying at the home through the holidays.

Some Fisher Houses have a 'wish list' of items that the manager would like to add and/or replace in the house. These wish lists have included large items such as children's backyard play sets, barbeque grills, laptop computers for each room, outdoor tables and chairs, as well as smaller items such as books, DVDs, and small appliances.

We also welcome volunteers to tend to the gardens surrounding the house. Although the homes and landscape are maintained by the military base and the Veterans Administration, both are limited in offering enhancements to the landscape. Our volunteers often step in and plant the seasonal flowers and shrubbery to make the homes an even more inviting environment.
