This program is active until June 30, 2027
STEP3 is an aerobic exercise/smoking cessation research study at six San Antonio area YMCAs.

Candidates for this study should be:

  • 18 or older;
  • daily smokers who are motivated to quit;
  • not currently exercising but would like to begin.
Participants will complete 75 minutes per week of exercise at their local YMCA for 15 weeks. In Week 6, participants make their first attempt to quit, with research staff monitoring their progress.
 
Participants will receive free of charge:
  • 4-month YMCA membership including a personal trainer;
  • counseling through the Texas Tobacco Quitline for 6-8 weeks; 
  • nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patches for up to 8 weeks; and
  • up to $300 compensation.
