Hospice is an appropriate course of care for terminally ill patients in the last six months of their lives, at a time when curative treatments are no longer an option.

Hospice caregivers help patients manage their illness and remain as comfortable as possible in their environment. The goal of hospice is symptom management rather than treatment or recovery. Hospice care complements the guidance of a patient’s physician.

Hospice helps ease the burden of families caring for patients during this time.

When is someone ready for Hospice care?

  • At the recommendation of their physician
  • When diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and when symptoms are no longer responding to a curative treatment
  • If you feel that your loved one may qualify for hospice services, please call one of our offices to discuss hospice eligibility and specific health conditions.

Care Locations

Our goal is to provide hospice services in the environment that best meets the needs of the individual patient, caregiver, and other family members. To that end, we provide care in whatever setting our patient calls home:

  • Personal Home – When possible and desired, we help our patients remain at home during their terminal illness. Whether care is provided in the patient’s home or a caregiver’s home, our team of professionals and volunteers makes sure that the appropriate equipment and supplies are placed in the residence so that it is as comfortable and well-equipped as possible.
  • Nursing, Assisted, and Independent Living Facilities – When caring for a patient who resides in a nursing home, an assisted living, or an independent living facility, our hospice team complements the services and skills of the facility staff and works with that staff to care for the patient. In addition, we offer our full spectrum of support services to the patient’s family.

The hospice care team that we bring to our  clients and their families includes:

  • Nurses
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Social Workers
  • Therapists
  • Patient’s physician
  • Hospice medical director
  • Home health aides
  • Bereavement counselors
  • Chaplains
  • Volunteers

How we Support

The Green Beret Foundation is dedicated to caring for our Gold Star and Surviving Families as they are revered members of our community. The final sacrifice of their Green Berets causes us to pause, reflect, and give thanks for the freedoms we hold so dear.

Our mission is to help the family navigate their difficult journey, give them the tools they need, and empower them to take control of their future. In the immediate wake of the Green Beret’s death, we offer financial assistance to help ease the burden of the expenses the family may incur during this time.

Long term, we strive to maintain relationships with the family and communicate with the Special Forces Groups to identify any gaps we may be able to fill. We will always honor our fallen and support their families.

Supporting the long-term health of a Green Beret's Mind, Body, and Spirit.

The long-term health of a Green Beret’s mind, body, and spirit is of the utmost importance to the Foundation. We supplement the care that the Military Health System (MHS) and Veterans Health Administration (VA) provide to ensure total wellness for the Green Beret.

Some examples of how we support our community:

  • Funded Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for TBI and PTSD
  • Alpha-Stim®
  • Infrared Light Therapy
  • ChiliPad™
  • Neurofeedback
  • Laser Regeneration Therapy
  • Aphasia Therapy
  • Access to substance abuse treatment
  • Inpatient/Outpatient healthcare costs not covered by TRICARE or the Veterans Health Administration

Health and Wellness Support Process:

  1. A Green Beret, family member, or Care Coalition advocate contacts the Foundation to inform us of a need that has arisen in our community.
  2. We ensure the person is, in fact, a Green Beret and that the need is valid and not supported by the Veterans Administration.
  3. We require supporting documentation to communicate the scope and cost of the support required.
  4. We require supporting documentation to communicate the scope and cost of the support required.
  5. We require supporting documentation to communicate the scope and cost of the support required.
  6. We continuously engage with the Green Beret and his family to see if the support has been helpful and if other needs have arisen.

At VITAS we care for patients with an interdisciplinary team comprising a nurse, physician, aide, social worker, and chaplain. Other clinical professionals, from a music therapist to a trained volunteer, may work with the team to help meet the emotional and spiritual needs of the patient and their family. Our teams design personalized care plans to ensure comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

Most of the time, hospice care is brought to the patient at home, since home is where most seriously ill people want to be: in familiar surroundings with familiar routines and familiar faces.
