Promotoras are state-certified community health workers who offer in-home parenting courses focusing on parenting strengths, growth and development of children, establishing nurturing routines, and guiding children's behavior. The parent education classes use a hands-on curriculum with a concurrent children's program, educational groups, follow-up services, and networking activities. The goal is to ensure children are kindergarten-ready and children have a safe, nurturing home.

A unique pilot program created by Councilwoman Gonzales, along with Family Service, it uses a peer-to-peer mentor model, allowing trained community members known as Promotoras, as well as parents in the same targeted zip code areas, to provide valuable in-home healthcare education to families.

District 5, zip codes 78207 and 78205 primarily, but the Promotoras can serve families throughout Bexar County for families with children under the age of 10.

Case Managers direct families to many Any Baby Can program as well as help link families to many local and state programs. All Any Baby Can services are offered at no cost - regardless of income - to families who have a child birth through 17 years of age with a chronic illness, disability, developmental delay or health risk and who reside in Bexar County or one of the surrounding 18 counties.

When this is the case, we strive to connect you with the appropriate services. Let us know what type of help you need, and we will point you in the right direction.

The mission of the homebound ministry at St. Anthony de Padua is to bring Jesus, both in the Eucharist and in the gift of our presence to our sisters and brothers in the community who are unable to be present at the Eucharistic table because of illness or disability.

This extends to those in nursing homes, retirement centers, hospitals, or private homes-wherever this need is present. We try to meet two times a year with the Pastor, so that the members can discuss and share any situations or ideas that can improve our ministry. Please call the rectory if you are unable to attend Mass and would like to receive the Eucharist.

There are four Nursing/Assisted Living or Independent Living Homes in the St. Anthony de Padua area that we visit regularly. Volunteers visit with the residents and on special occasions will provide gifts and goodies for them.

Each week there is a Communion Service or a Mass at the various homes and the Eucharist is brought regularly to all Catholic residents.

Gabriella's Gifts is a part of Gabriella's Smile Foundation’s focus on providing children with cancer and their families in San Antonio area hospitals an opportunity to experience joy and smiles in the midst of their difficult journey.

Gabriella received gifts all the time. During radiation, as she struggled to get through the 33 days of her treatment, our friends collected something special for her to open every day. She had enough gifts to open one daily after she came home from her treatment. She also received packages every week with toys and gifts that brought a much needed smile to her face. While in the hospital, she received presents nearly every day. Gabriella would often pick out treats from her big stash and donate them to the prize room in the hospital. 

We are committed to providing support to families in San Antonio that are in the hospital. Whether it is backpacks for their children at the beginning of the school year, a warm meal, a gift card for coffee, a gas card or a gift on special holidays, this is a need that we want to fill.

To qualify, families must have a child who has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently receiving treatment in San Antonio.

Benefits of receiving hospice and palliative care include a comprehensive care team consisting of nurses, aides, other caregivers, medicines, supplies, and equipment, with no out-of-pocket expenses for the hospice diagnosis. Chaplains, volunteers, and bereavement specialists are also part of the team helping you and your family receive the emotional and spiritual care you need.

The Hospital and Homebound Ministry of St. Gregory’s consists of visiting parishioners in their homes who are not able to attend Mass in person. Regular visits are set up at the convenience of the homebound to pray with them, offer communion and let them know what is happening by bringing them the weekly bulletins and sharing community news with them. Just being able to sit and visit to let them know that we are thinking of them and praying for them is very rewarding and brings them joy. Some of the visits here at St. Gregory’s are done by our Legion of Mary groups, but we do have other individuals assisting us in visitations to hospitals and continued contact with our parishioners after their release to homes, rehab, nursing homes or hospice.

For a medically complex child or adult, the transition from hospital to home can be a difficult one. Our mission is to make this process smoother and less overwhelming by assisting with everything from coordinating the discharge process with the hospital case manager to settling in after returning home. No matter your situation, having the right help in place can make a world of difference to you and your family.

The Meals on Wheels San Antonio Friendly Visitor Program is a volunteer-based program where the goal is to provide companionship and a meaningful friendship to a homebound citizen in Bexar County. Friendly Visitors are matched with a homebound senior based on similar interests, availability, and gender preference. Friendly Visitor volunteers can visit in-person with a homebound senior and do things such as play games, take a walk, or chat over coffee or tea. The volunteer could also call the client every week to chat about how they are doing. This position is great for individuals who have a heart for helping out others and who would love to spend some free time with a person who needs a Friendly Visitor. Too often, seniors who are no longer able to leave their homes can start to feel isolated, lonely and depressed, which may worsen existing health conditions.

Friendly Visitor volunteers help to alleviate concerns by visiting a homebound senior to provide much needed companionship. Just a simple conversation can make all the difference to lonely person.

Volunteers interested in becoming a Friendly Visitor must:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Pass a criminal and sex offender background check
• Complete a one-hour training/orientation
• Be a little flexible to care recipients' need for quality time
• Be able to relate in a positive and warm manner to older adults

Friendly Visitor volunteers are matched with older adults based on personality and interest, so that a bond can easily be developed. Once paired, volunteers are expected to provide friendship and conversation. In some cases, Friendly Visitors offer minor assistance where appropriate (e.g. walks in the neighborhood, computer assistance, etc.).

Any Meals on Wheels client who is in need of companionship services, may be suffering from depression, or has experienced the loss of a loved one, may be eligible for service.

Led by a Registered Nurse, our compassionate care professionals provide in-home support for children with disabilities such as spina bifida or cerebral palsy, as well as children with intellectual or developmental delays. These services may include assistance with feeding, transferring and repositioning, bathing or other daily needs.

Our goal as care professionals is to ensure that children with disabilities and special needs are receiving the care they need and the support they deserve. Experienced care professionals are ready to assist with:

• Dressing

• Reporting conditions and changes to supervisory RN and/or physician
