Members of this committee minister to grieving families by helping them with funeral arrangements and to find some healing in the loss of a loved one.

Activities:

Lead a rosary at the funeral home, assist the family in finding lectors and gift bearers for the funeral Mass. For All Souls Day, the commitee organizes a memorial mass for all the families whose loved ones were buried from St. Ann during the year. In addition to this ministry, after the funeral, the commitee contacts a family member inviting them to host a rosary in memory of their loved one in their home (Valley of Tears).

The ministry continues by offering the family the opportunity to attend a monthly support group (St. Ann Support Group for the Bereaved). Once a year they hold a Holiday Workshop to help survivors through the holidays.

Anyone who feels the call to serve those who are having to deal with the loss of a loved one, are welcome to join.

Heart 2 Heart is a ministry of San Antonio’s First Baptist Church and was founded on two simple principles:

  • We all experience brokenness sometime in our life.
  • There is healing in God’s Word.

Typical Support and Recovery Groups:

Groups typically include those listed below but can vary. Registration is required for each group.

Divorce Care
Will anyone accept you after your divorce? This group will. Take steps toward courage and wholeness with those who know how deeply divorce can cut.

Considering Forgiveness
Does forgiveness mean excusing harmful behavior? Is forgiveness necessary? Explore these difficult questions in a group that won't insult your dignity by minimizing or downplaying the hurt you have known.

Grief Share
Grief is a burden too heavy for anyone’s shoulders to bear alone. In this fellowship, you’ll find a group that stands by one another when the loss you’ve known bends you to the ground.

Men's Freedom Group
(meets year-round on Tuesdays)
We are a Christ-centered, 12-step self-help group providing a safe and confidential setting (apart from other H2H groups) for men recovering from sexual addiction. Our goal is to provide you with the support of fellow recovery travelers with once-weekly meetings year-round.

Journey to Restoration
This caring ministry creates a safe space for those who during childhood were abused, sexually, physically, emotionally, verbally or by neglect.

Cancer Care
Facilitated by those who know cancer firsthand, the cancer support group aims to become a place of welcome, safety, and tenderness for you in a harsh and frightening time.

All groups are open to the community. You do not need to be a member of the church.

When a person loses something or someone valuable to them, feelings of grief can be overbearing.

Grief can leave a person feeling sad, hopeless, isolated, irritable, and numb by affecting them mentally, emotionally, and physically. It’s important to understand that healing from grief is a process and everyone copes with this emotion differently.

An alternative treatment method includes psychotherapy. Through psychotherapy, a patient may:

  • Improve coping skills
  • Reduce feelings of blame and guilt
  • Explore and process emotions

Consider seeking professional support if feelings of grief do not ease over time.

Grief is the emotional response to any type of loss. Perhaps of a loved one due to death or divorce, but also the loss of a job, a pet, financial stability, or safety after trauma. Feelings of grief can be overwhelming, and it can be hard to know how to manage and overcome these emotions.

It is important to have patience with yourself and others during this process as it is a healthy part of healing. If you are having trouble coping on your own, or know of someone who could use extra support, a therapist can assist.

Common symptoms of grief include:

  • Shock and disbelief: feeling numb about the event, having trouble believing it happened, denying it, or expecting to suddenly see the person you lost.
  • Sadness: crying, or having feelings of emptiness, despair, yearning, or loneliness.
  • Guilt: regret over things unsaid or undone, feeling responsible for the death or the event, or shame from feeling relieved by a person’s passing.
  • Anger: blaming someone for injustice.
Fear: feelings of anxiety, helplessness, and insecurity, or having panic attacks.
  • Physical symptoms: fatigue, nausea, weight loss or gain, aches and pains, and insomnia.

In the Spring of 2022 our  Children’s Cancer Support Center opened it’s doors  to address this problem directly by providing special programming that offers cancer support groups, bereavement support groups, educational workshops, health and wellness support, resources and referrals as well as social activities for families. It’s the city’s first cancer support center exclusively for children.

Our programs are designed to empower parents by providing them with the tools necessary to improve their social connections, give them sense of control and provide a holistic approach to help them navigate their child’s cancer diagnosis. We believe that this will improve the lives and the health and wellness of both the body and mind.

We know that it takes a community to overcome the challenges that come with a childhood cancer diagnosis. For families that are feeling alone or isolated due to their child’s diagnosis, we believe that  they will  find the support they need when they come to the Children’s Cancer Support Center.

The Children’s Cancer Support Center provides resources and support for families that have a child diagnosed with cancer by taking a holistic approach to help in all areas including mental and social factors affecting the entire family.

Programs offered at the center include the following:

  • Mental Health Support Services - support and networking groups for cancer families and bereaved cancer families
  • Resources & Referrals - connecting members to other services in the community
  • Health and wellness programs- through strategic partnerships with the community
  • Educational Workshops - presentations by experts in their field
  • Social Activities - fun social events for children and their families
  • Financial Assiatnce-Financial assistance may be available for families who have a child undergoing active treatment.

Calendar of events can be viewed here.

To qualify, families must have a child who has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently receiving treatment in San Antonio.

Application can be found here.

Services are provided for FREE and at no cost to families of children diagnosed with cancer.
