Suppose you or a loved one is seeking an immigration waiver or filing to petition a judge to grant a suspension of deportation. In that case, a clinical evaluation can help strengthen your case. Four types of immigration waivers can benefit from a clinical mental health evaluation:

  • Extreme Hardship Waivers (I-601)
  • U-Visa (Victims of Crime)
  • Violence Against Women Act (VAWA-Domestic Violence)
  • Political Asylum

Understanding that each individual’s experience is unique, a safe environment is provided to help the client report any underlying circumstances to help present a compelling case. My personal experience attending St. Mary’s University allowed me to meet peers from across the globe. Traveling throughout Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East further reinforced my admiration and respect for other cultures and faiths.

I am privileged to have worked on evaluations for people from Mexico, Central & South America, China, and India. As a bilingual clinician licensed by the Texas Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors, I am also a graduate of the Immigration Evaluation Institute.

Stress Management

This is a weekly 8-session course to provide information and skills for managing stress and anxiety. The focus will be on what we can control right now to help us feel better. During each group, we will learn and practice a new skill that you can use whenever you feel overwhelmed. Each group is accompanied by a handout that you can keep to practice the skills between sessions and to review the material covered in the group as needed well after the 8-session course.

Resources Group

Adjusting to a new culture can be extremely challenging because everything is different and new including the language, the laws, and the healthcare system. The resource group focuses on connecting you with practical information and resources to help you meet your basic needs. Some of the areas covered include legal referrals and medical referrals, referrals to English classes, resources for food, and providing information on other community resources and programs.

Art Class

The art class meets weekly for two hours. No prior experience is necessary and all skill levels from beginner to advanced are welcome. This class is led by Dr. Karin Montero, CST’s Medical Director who is also an artist. Dr. Montero provides instruction on different art techniques while also facilitating lively conversation that routinely includes a lot of laughter.

In preparation for the week, each group member will be texted a series of images in advance of the art group that you can then use to paint or draw as you practice new techniques during class and between classes. Art is another way to practice mindfulness and many people find it relaxing and healing – this class might serve as a testament to the saying that “sometimes laughter is the best medicine!”

Meditation Group

Meditation is an ancient wisdom tradition that over time has been incorporated in various forms by almost all major religions and spiritual traditions. CST’s weekly meditation group is welcoming of all religious and non-religious backgrounds and spiritual traditions. The objectives of this group are to promote a sense of safety and stability, facilitate healing and empowerment, enhance resilience and well-being, improve emotion regulation, and create community and social connection and support.

Meditation has been linked to improvements in sleep, attention, memory, emotion regulation, blood pressure, and chronic pain. It has also been shown to enhance well-being and compassion. Meditation is simple but not easy so we use the power of coming together in a group format to provide encouragement and support to one another as we establish a meditation practice that fits our daily lives.

Women’s Yoga Class

CST hosts a weekly yoga class that is open to all female-identified clients. Yoga is an ancient mindfulness practice with origins in northern India and a philosophy that emphasizes connecting the mind, body, and spirit. In this class we also place a special emphasis on practicing kindness and compassion towards ourselves by meeting ourselves where we are, befriending our bodies, and cultivating appreciation for what our bodies can do.

Yoga has been linked to health benefits such as improved sleep, increased strength and flexibility, and improvements in circulation, blood pressure, mental clarity, and well-being, among others. If you would like to learn more about this group, availability in the class, and to discuss options to get connected with the materials that you will need, please see your CST counselor or point of contact.

Survivors Support Group

This group aims to promote empowerment, resilience, and healing by leveraging the power of social support and the wisdom and experience that exists within the group. This group will provide information about common reactions to distressing life events, and discuss and share coping strategies and community resources.

Above all, this group seeks to provide a safe space for people to connect with other survivors who have also had to leave their country and face many challenges in adjusting to a new country and culture.

Art Therapy Is a form of psychotherapy based on the process of creating visual images through drawing, painting, sculpting, and the use of other art materials. In art therapy, emotions and thoughts are expressed symbolically through the creation of personal imagery. Art bypasses verbal defenses and limitations, allowing for insight to occur in a non-threatening way. The art produced can be reflected upon, and with guidance from the art therapist, one can explore the meaning of the images and work through areas of conflict and distress.

All behavior has meaning. It is a way of communicating feelings and needs. So-called problem behavior is one way a child expresses conflict, which is difficult to conceptualize and verbalize. A child can channel and give conceptual form to negative feelings and behaviors through working with art materials. The clarification and responses of an art therapist facilitates the child’s awareness of patterns, intentions, and the meaning of behavior.

A child-centered approach curriculum addresses social and developmental issues for children and teens in the foster care system. This curriculum incorporates culturally-rooted concepts and values of each individual through indigenous teachings, writings, and expressive modalities.

In addition, clients will have the opportunity to learn meditation, guided imagery, and the calming effects of quieting the mind through meditation techniques.

Licensed professional counselors provide confidential psychotherapy sessions to individuals, families, and in group settings to those who are experiencing behavioral, social, or challenging situations as it relates to being in the foster care system. Counseling session objectives are to strengthen personal awareness, nurture, heal, foster positive social changes, improve family communication, and expand and deepen their personal skills needed to help cope with the challenges that come from being the foster care system.

Individual therapy is the foundation of mental health care. It's where you and your therapist will dig into your past, dreams, goals, and pains and work together to find solutions. Here is how Ellie can support you with individual therapy.

  • Strategize how to change harmful thought patterns and behaviors.
  • Improve interpersonal skills and build strong connections with others.
  • Discover and fall in love with your authentic self – both outside and in.
  • Receive treatment for disorders such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, or ADHD.
  • Build trust with your therapist and find your safe place to talk and decompress.
  • Set achievable short-term and long-term goals for your healing journey.
  • Cope with difficult life situations, such as a divorce, death, job loss, or trauma.
  • Establish healthy boundaries in relationships, work, and other areas.

Ellie's Promise for Your Mental Health Care

  • We find innovative solutions that work: Every therapist at Ellie is determined to help you shatter any obstacles in your path. We’re not afraid to push the envelope and think outside the box to help you heal.
  • Your care is 100% confidential: We will never betray your trust. Anything you say during sessions is between just you and your therapist.
  • We value what makes you, you: We don't want to change who you are or make you conform to who society says you need to be. Authenticity is a core value at Ellie. We want to help the real you shine.
  • Your comfort matters to us: Therapy can be tough. We want to make your sessions as comfortable as possible. Our offices are designed with your healing in mind. Or consider teletherapy if it's the most comfortable for you!
