Project Transformation’s after-school Reading Buddies serves children grades K-5 in all three geographies. Project Transformation Rio Texas (PT) is committed to supporting children in their love of reading and academic growth. Reading Allstars virtual sessions for K-5 take place on Zoom. Families choose one 30-minute session for their child to participate in weekly. Once registered, Project Transformation will send the Zoom information to each family, and the Zoom information will be the same for every session. During Reading Allstars virtual sessions volunteers listen to participants read, ask questions, and offer strategies for reading help. Volunteers and the PT staff work to help participants maintain or improve their reading level and love of literacy throughout the school year.

We host our grief camps four times a year for children ages 7-17 and one offering including their caregiver. These camps are designed for children who have experienced the death of a loved one. Through our grief camps, children are given the opportunity to be surrounded by peers who have similar death loss experiences.

Children and families who attend will participate in many different therapeutic activities to work toward developing healthy coping skills.

The Sunshine Cottage Day School provides children who are deaf or hard of hearing the auditory-oral foundation to become independent and active participants of the hearing world. Our children utilize state-of-the-art hearing technology to develop listening and spoken language to communicate naturally and effectively without the use of sign language.

We are a Texas Education Agency (TEA) approved non-public, non-profit school for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as children with typical hearing. All children enrolled in the day-school program benefit from a research-based curriculum to develop both language and academic skills in an experience-based environment.

The Parent-Infant Program at Sunshine Cottage provides parent-focused, child-driven intervention for families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing birth to three years. Our mission is to guide and coach parents to assume the role of the primary language facilitators in order to fire and wire their child’s brain for listening. Our program is dedicated to counseling parents about hearing loss, hearing technology, and advocacy. Parents learn to implement strategies to develop auditory skills that support spoken language. We endorse the development of fluent listening and spoken language as the foundation for literacy and future academic success.

Academic Assistance: Our site coordinators work hard to ensure that students have the resources to progress academically. From providing students with tutors to finding and creating quiet spaces where students can study, we do whatever it takes to create an optimal learning environment for our students.

Life Skills: Through one-on-one workshops, team building, and guest speakers, we work with students to develop social-emotional learning, character education, social skills building, and conflict resolution.

Behavioral Interventions: Many of our students face and overcome difficult obstacles in their lives. However, their survival skills aren’t always effective in the classroom or in the workplace. Our program teaches students positive ways to cope with anger, conflict resolution, and other strategies to keep them focused on school.

Family Engagement: Site coordinators connect families with counselors and social workers to make sure that home is a healthy, nurturing environment where a student can feel safe.

Being a Reader™ provides comprehensive reading instruction, systematically developing both foundational skills and comprehension. This research-based program integrates rich literacy experiences with explicit social skills instruction and activities that foster students’ growth as responsible, caring, and collaborative people. 

Through an engaging combination of whole-class, small-group, and individualized instruction—including daily independent reading with teacher conferring—the Being a Reader program not only develops students’ reading proficiency, but also their love for reading and talking about books.

Being a Reader can be implemented as powerful, stand-alone Tier 1 instruction for grades K–2 or serve as a seamlessly integrated program within our comprehensive K–5 English Language Arts curriculum, Collaborative Literacy.

How It Works:
Being a Reader follows a continuum of reading development to meet each student at their instructional point of need and guide them to their next level of literacy through an engaging combination of whole-class, small-group, and individualized approaches. 

Each grade level includes either seven or eight instructional units organized around two instructional strands: Reading and Word Study.

The strands work together to develop comprehension, fluency, decoding strategies, word analysis, spelling, vocabulary, and independent reading. Progress monitoring and other assessment tools help teachers make informed, targeted instructional decisions to ensure reading success for every child.

SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words) is a research-based decoding intervention program proven to help new and struggling readers in grades K-12 build skills and confidence for fluent, independent reading.

The SIPPS program provides a structured literacy approach to foundational skills instruction through explicit instructional routines focused on phonological awareness, spelling-sounds, and sight words.

The systematic scope and sequence supports students who struggle with decoding, including students identified with dyslexia, in an accelerative approach. Each SIPPS level corresponds to a specific stage of reading development: simple alphabetic, spelling pattern, and polysyllabic/morphemic. Daily SIPPS lessons and reading practice in appropriate texts help readers achieve automaticity and accuracy, which in turn allow them to focus on comprehension.

Whether used as a stand-alone intervention or integrated to support foundational skills in Collaborative Literacy programs, the SIPPS program allows students to:

  • Respond orally during the foundational skills routines and receive immediate, strategic feedback.

Challenger Learning Center Missions immerse students in grades 4-12 into the roles of scientists, engineers and astronauts engaging in our state-of-the-art simulated learning environment. Each 90-minute mission experience is aligns to the state’s TEKS and reinforces the importance of  21st century skills with teamwork, communications and problem solving components within each scenario.  Challenger missions are reserved well in advance by school and community groups. Partnering ISD’s have a period of prioritized registration through September before the calendar is opened to other groups. A single mission costs $500/class of 20-36 students. 

Teachers bringing a group to either a Mission or Micronauts are required to attend a Pre-Mission Training before their program. For more educator information on Challenger Learning Center Missions, training and Reservations go to the Educators page.

The Micronaut Program at Scobee Education Center provides young children age 4 – 9 with an authentic STEM experience as they travel through a simulated mission to the International Space Station. The mission models “Best Practices” in early childhood education that capitalizes on the young child’s natural curiosity to explore and learn about the world they are a part of. By making STEM education a focus of a child’s early education we begin to change the world one class at a time by instilling a lifelong passion to learn about and care for our planet earth. Show your child the true magic of reading with The DoSeum's Author Series. Over the course of the year, we will feature four children's authors whose literature excites, inspires, and educates. At The DoSeum, they’ll read their stories aloud, share their creative process, sign books, and meet and mingle with families afterwards. These engaging visits aren’t just fun—they help foster a deeper appreciation and connection to the books your child is reading. Your child's curiosity knows no bounds and there are no limits to what they can do. The DoSeum Beyond Limits is our revitalized program created to meet the needs of all of San Antonio's children, no matter how big or how small those needs may be. At The DoSeum Beyond Limits, we create a peaceful environment of inclusivity that supports children of all needs-providing a spectrum of possibilities as diverse and vibrant as the children we serve.

  • Smaller, controlled crowds to create a calm, uncrowded environment ideal for families in need of accommodations for high sensitivity to sensory stimuli, limited mobility, and generally in need of a calmer, quieter space.
  • Accommodating accessories of your choice to make your experience suit your needs. Sunglasses, headphones, and earplugs are all available at the front desk, free of charge.
  • Assistive signage to help guide your family towards learning environments that best suit your needs-marking high sensory, low sensory, calming, and tactile areas.
  • Exhibit modifications to create calmer environments for families with high-sensitivities to stimuli, including decreased noise, soothing light changes, and more.
  • Specialized staff to support your family's learning and play needs; staff are specially trained through consultation with community partners by Any Baby Can and the Region 20 Special Education Department.

Create, make, and learn together! In our Family Workshops, families work together to explore STEM and art concepts through a unique family experience. Soder a family stained glass, dissect underwater creatures or create a family board game to play on game nights.
