The Texas Heritage Project conducts humanities-based research to assemble never-before-made-public family artifacts of historical significance to the South-Central Texas region.

To develop the archive/repository, the Project holds community-based events called "History Harvests" during which families gather to display their family's artifacts. Together they celebrate their cultural identity and the efforts of the Indigenous/Latino communities that contributed and continue to contribute to the rich cultural history and heritage of the region.

Each year countless organizations and groups in San Antonio pay tribute to the deceased in observance of Dia de los Muertos. At Esperanza our Dia de los Muertos celebration occurs every year on November 1st at the Rinconcito de Esperanza (816 S. Colorado).

Each year in addition to the Dia de los Muertos celebration, the Esperanza presents Day of the Dead workshops and activities for community members to learn the various aspects of the holiday. The Esperanza aims to train other community members on how to make ofrendas/altares, paper flower, and sugar skulls -all of which are vital pieces of the Day of the Dead celebration. Workshops are open to all ages. Supplies are provided to participants.

Guests are invited to join the San Fernando cemetery tours covering one of the oldest cemeteries in San Antonio with a history dating back to the mid-1800s. Visitors can also stroll through the streets of Guadalupe as we unveil new photobanners as part of our En Aquellos Tiempos Oral History project.

Started in 1995 and operating out of a house in San Antonio’s Westside, the MujerArtes Women’s Clay Cooperative has been among Esperanza’s groundbreaking programs for 24 years. MujerArtes draws thousands of visitors to their exhibits and studio each year, holding exhibits at the studio, Esperanza gallery and community venues including art fairs, schools, and libraries throughout the city year round. Annual exhibits include Peace Market, Mother’s Day, Día de la Virgen, Dia de los Muertos, and others.

At the MujerArtes studio the women, with the guidance of experienced ceramicists, shape the clay into historic snapshots of their lives as workers, heads of households and marginalized women in a country where they have always had to struggle. International artists/cooperatives Irene Aguilar, Enedina Vasquez, Taller Leñateros and Domitila Dominguez are invited for annual cultural exchanges.Through cooperative efforts, the women create an environment where each woman is a teacher and student by way of their creativity and cultural experiences.

For 24 years, our women’s clay cooperative has facilitated the cultural grounding of low-income women in San Antonio’s Westside through clay workshops 5 days a week and over 5 exhibits annually. We have witnessed the growth of women, many of whom have never received formal artistic training, resulting in a diverse group of talented and accomplished artists. The Museo del Westside is dedicated to preserving and presenting the unique history, heritage, culture, pride, work ethic, and diverse experiences of la gente del Westside to increase understanding and appreciation by building and strengthening knowledge of the Westside to create a more vibrant future for our community.

The Museo will collect, conserve, research, communicate, and exhibit the tangible and intangible heritage of the historic Westside. As a community participatory museum, the museum will invite the community to participate in developing the museum’s exhibits and programs.

This structure began with the southern wooden half of the building, which dates to the 1930s. Originally a residence, around 1950, it became the M & E Grocery Store operated by Manuel and Elida Reyes. About 1959, Mr. Reyes added the concrete block addition where he operated Ruben’s Ice House, a longtime community gathering space that closed in 1987. Twenty years later, Esperanza acquired Ruben’s Ice House with the support of the Reyes children.

The Paseo por el Westside is a historic and cultural preservation community gathering on the Westside of San Antonio. The event takes places usually the first weekend in May as part of Preservation Month. Each year, community comes together at the Rinconcito de Esperanza (Little Corner of Hope), located at 816 S. Colorado St., to celebrate culture, history, and conviviencia (conviviality).

The event fuses storytelling, music, education, film, and history in one jam-packed day. Workshops with Jacinto Madrigal and his medicinal plants, Introduction to chilis as well as Enrique Sanchez’s informative plática on Pan Dulce always bring in the curious crowd. Other workshops have also included how to wash using a washbin, flour tortilla making and how to do genealogical research with local resources such as the Texana/ Genealogy Department at the San Antonio Central Public Library. Alongside these pláticas and throughout the day, beloved and old-time children’s games such as zancos (stilts), trompos (wooden spinning tops) and canicas (marbles) are available for children and adults alike.

During the Paseo, guests are encouraged to join one of the three Westside walking tours as Westside Preservation Alliance members guide guests around this neighborhood to learn about its historic, cultural and architectural significance. Walking tour stops include Guadalupe Church, the White Star Building, Casa Maldonado, the Guadalupe Theater, Fite Alley Shotguns, MujerArtes Studio, and the Historic San Fernando #1 Cemetery.

Our performance ensembles are the cornerstone of our organization. These choirs consist of boys and girls ages 9+ and provide a comprehensive and challenging curriculum of performance-based instruction that ranges from the basics of vocal technique to music literacy and history, all accomplished using a wide and balanced repertoire.

SA Life Academy offers a standard-based day program designed to meet the holistic needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Certified Special Education teachers design a stimulating curriculum that includes relationship building, art, recreational therapy, health and wellness, community outreach, and life and job-skills training. 

SA Life Academy also collaborates with volunteers and professionals throughout the community to offer specialized classes such as yoga, recreational therapy, and gardening. Through community integration which includes 5-6 hours of volunteerism per week, SA Life Academy students give back to the community in a meaningful way.

There are no more than 12 students per day in each class.

To be considered for admission to SA Life Academy, applicants must meet the following requirements:
• Must be diagnosed with an intellectual and/or developmental disability (I/DD)
• Must be 18 or over
• Must not exhibit aggressive behavior or be a danger to themselves or others
• Must not be at high risk for elopement (running away)
• Must be able to handle reasonably crowded or stimulating environments in the community
• Independence with toileting and hygiene (does not require assistance)

ALAS, SAY Sí’s theatre program, provides students interested in the performing arts with opportunities to develop their skills in acting, directing, playwriting, technical theatre and stage management. Committed to the creation of new and original performance work by, for, and about San Antonio youth, ALAS challenges students to draw from their own experiences, observations, and insights to produce theatre of relevance to their lives and their communities.

ALAS operates as a collaborative ensemble known as the ALAS Youth Theatre Company. In the company, every student’s talent is valued and essential. Students have ownership over their theatrical work, and a voice in the artistic, technical, and creative decisions involved in every aspect of the production process.

Emphasizing leadership skills and civic engagement, ALAS aims to empower youth to create work that addresses community needs and concerns, challenges prejudices and social injustice, and celebrates diversity and difference.

This program is for students in grades 6-11.

SAY Sí’s Media Arts Studio is a creative innovative technology-based learning program that provides a hands-on focus on filmmaking and photography. Throughout the year, SAY Sí students, along with the help of professional staff and established professionals in the media industry, collaborate and produce short films and documentaries. Students have the opportunity to explore and utilize their talents in all phases of the production, from writing the screenplay, scouting film locations, directing or budgeting, to casting, editing, creating an original musical score or working collaboratively on lighting production. Once the film is produced, the students also work on the accompanying marketing of their work in addition to showcasing their movies’ premieres.

This program is for students in grades 6-11.

WAM, SAY Sí’s multidisciplinary middle school program, is a year-round Saturday program in visual arts, theatre, media arts and new media. SAY Sí employs its junior and senior high school students to work as student instructors, allowing for reciprocally beneficial peer-to-peer mentoring.

Classes take place each Saturday throughout the calendar year and focus on long-term individual achievement and skills enhancement. The mentoring between our high school and middle school students is a unique aspect to this program. It gives middle school students the opportunity to learn from some of our advanced high school students and it gives our high school students real-world job skills and experience. Students in this program work on projects that develop cognitive skills, including; problem solving, reasoning, and decision-making as well as interpersonal skills such as oral communication, teamwork and self-fulfillment.

This program is for students in grades 6-8.

The HIVE is the youngest and second-largest SAY Sí studio. There student-artists focus on digital arts, comics, animation, creative coding, game design, new media, transmedia, interactivity, and storytelling through systems.

HIVE challenges youth to think about interactivity, analyze art and new media critically and decide when working collaboratively or working independently are the best modes for getting their ideas across. Students explore new kinds of media and intersections of different media and make anything that they need computers to produce or experience.

In the HIVE students:

Students study drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and art history with a focus on the development of entrepreneurial and marketing skills. The program’s participants consist of approximately 50 students that attend studio sessions throughout the week that offer creative projects involving a variety of mediums and opportunities to explore and master new techniques.

SAY Sí’s visual arts program aims to provide students projects which involve cultural relevance and a variety of mediums; mentoring, instruction and guidance from staff and visiting artists; entrepreneurial and exhibition opportunities for students to financially benefit from the display and sale of their work; assistance with the development of portfolios, resumes, and applications to art schools, community colleges, and universities, and/or assistance in finding jobs upon graduation from high school.

To be eligible to apply, students must meet the following requirements:

Stress Management

This is a weekly 8-session course to provide information and skills for managing stress and anxiety. The focus will be on what we can control right now to help us feel better. During each group, we will learn and practice a new skill that you can use whenever you feel overwhelmed. Each group is accompanied by a handout that you can keep to practice the skills between sessions and to review the material covered in the group as needed well after the 8-session course.

Resources Group

Adjusting to a new culture can be extremely challenging because everything is different and new including the language, the laws, and the healthcare system. The resource group focuses on connecting you with practical information and resources to help you meet your basic needs. Some of the areas covered include legal referrals and medical referrals, referrals to English classes, resources for food, and providing information on other community resources and programs.

Art Class

The art class meets weekly for two hours. No prior experience is necessary and all skill levels from beginner to advanced are welcome. This class is led by Dr. Karin Montero, CST’s Medical Director who is also an artist. Dr. Montero provides instruction on different art techniques while also facilitating lively conversation that routinely includes a lot of laughter.

In preparation for the week, each group member will be texted a series of images in advance of the art group that you can then use to paint or draw as you practice new techniques during class and between classes. Art is another way to practice mindfulness and many people find it relaxing and healing – this class might serve as a testament to the saying that “sometimes laughter is the best medicine!”

Meditation Group

Meditation is an ancient wisdom tradition that over time has been incorporated in various forms by almost all major religions and spiritual traditions. CST’s weekly meditation group is welcoming of all religious and non-religious backgrounds and spiritual traditions. The objectives of this group are to promote a sense of safety and stability, facilitate healing and empowerment, enhance resilience and well-being, improve emotion regulation, and create community and social connection and support.

Meditation has been linked to improvements in sleep, attention, memory, emotion regulation, blood pressure, and chronic pain. It has also been shown to enhance well-being and compassion. Meditation is simple but not easy so we use the power of coming together in a group format to provide encouragement and support to one another as we establish a meditation practice that fits our daily lives.

Women’s Yoga Class

CST hosts a weekly yoga class that is open to all female-identified clients. Yoga is an ancient mindfulness practice with origins in northern India and a philosophy that emphasizes connecting the mind, body, and spirit. In this class we also place a special emphasis on practicing kindness and compassion towards ourselves by meeting ourselves where we are, befriending our bodies, and cultivating appreciation for what our bodies can do.

Yoga has been linked to health benefits such as improved sleep, increased strength and flexibility, and improvements in circulation, blood pressure, mental clarity, and well-being, among others. If you would like to learn more about this group, availability in the class, and to discuss options to get connected with the materials that you will need, please see your CST counselor or point of contact.

Survivors Support Group

This group aims to promote empowerment, resilience, and healing by leveraging the power of social support and the wisdom and experience that exists within the group. This group will provide information about common reactions to distressing life events, and discuss and share coping strategies and community resources.

Above all, this group seeks to provide a safe space for people to connect with other survivors who have also had to leave their country and face many challenges in adjusting to a new country and culture.

Accordian Lessons - This unique program offers students professional instruction on the 3-row button accordion.

Bajo Sexto Lessons - This unique program offers students professional instruction on the Mexican 12-string guitar.

As a non-profit organization, the Conjunto Heritage Taller offers low cost, and sometimes free lessons, to make this opportunity accessible to anyone who has an interest in learning.

The Conjunto Heritage Taller recognizes the positive impact of music on our aging community and we foster “creative aging”, by providing music programming that supports and enriches adults across the aging spectrum! Annually, with the support of the Texas Commission on the Arts, we hold at least two free senior programs consisting of 8-week long introductory accordion classes, held at different San Antonio senior centers, taught by one of our master accordion instructors.

Primary outcomes of our senior programs can be seen among our students, who develop an understanding of the accordion or bajo sexto and eventually perform in the senior recital. We have observed that students gain self-confidence and pride when they master tunes they have worked hard to learn, and when they go on stage and receive a positive audience response.

Students participating in our senior programs exhibit positive results with added benefits of warding off depression and loneliness. CHT senior programs are facilitated in predominantly low-income, inner-city senior centers with the goal of positively serving our communities through creative aging!

Students in this program receive the same curriculum and instruction as the comparable levels of the core ensembles and perform twice yearly in the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. We partner with the YMCA to provide on-campus afterschool care to our families. We were fortunate to secure a grant for the 22-23 and 23-24 school years that will allow us to provide after-school care for FREE for up to 75 families. 

Families who sign up for the free after-school option must commit to attending after-school care for at least 4 of the 5 days of the week for a minimum of one hour daily. We have notified families if they qualify for free after-school care.

A unique opportunity for your child to discover new passions at a young age!

Children have no creative bounds and an infinite bank of questions.

Their creativity, curiosity, and imagination need to be celebrated and fostered in schools and we are so excited to be able to offer elective classes every Friday for our children as an avenue in which to do this.

Every semester, our students will get to choose an elective to explore new passions and areas of interest. The first semester of every year will feature electives that are teacher-created and derived from the passion areas of our incredibly creative and diverse staff. Raindrop Foundation San Antonio (RFSA) is building mutual understanding, respect, and cooperation at the grassroots level among people of diverse faiths and cultures, with the ultimate intention of contributing to global peace.

Event-based (free or with registration fee).

Our music classes are open to anyone who can play an instrument or sing at any level. We will be teaching and playing traditional Turkish music as well as Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Christian, Sufi, Kurdish, Arabic, Romanian, Azerbaijan and adding new cultural music periodically.
