One of the most significant ministry opportunities we offer is Stone Soup. The story behind Stone Soup tells of a soldier who had a long distance to travel before getting back home. On the journey he became quite hungry and as he entered a small village he asked if anyone might be able to share a meal with him. Everyone he ran into said they didn't have much, in fact they all said that they didn't even have enough for their own families.

He was taken back by the sad situation he had encountered and he came up with the idea of Stone Soup. He went to the city park, started a fire, put a large cooking pot on the fire filled with water and a large stone. The children playing there asked him what he was doing and he said I'm making Stone Soup, want some? Well they kept watching him as he boiled the water, added salt and pepper all the while stirring the soup. Pretty soon other people came by and asked him, and he told them the same thing. Some people would say well I have a potato or two or I have some carrots, others said I have a soup bone and some said I have a cabbage. Before long the pot was filled with all kinds of great food, more than enough for everyone in town to have.

So as in the story we make Stone Soup every Sunday. It is a great time of fellowship and ministry. People share what they have and there is always more than enough for everyone. This time of fellowship has created a wonderful family atmosphere that has connected people from all walks of life. I think one of the most humbling statements I've heard about this meal is, "This is the only time I get to eat with anyone else."

Individuals aged 60 and over are provided with 2/3 of their daily nutritional allowance through our lunch program in a safe and supportive environment. Seniors participate in socialization, recreation, health & wellness education, as well as leadership development activities. They enjoy a variety of field trips, luncheons, arts and crafts, ceramics, Seniors in Play, and so much more. Outside experts are invited to present informative programs on topics of vital interest to seniors. In order to reduce isolation and empower senior’s wellness, we offer transportation to elders who have transitioned from drivers to riders.

Note: Must reside within a three-mile radius for transportation by the Center.

Each week, Assistant Pastor Tony, his wife, and a team of soul winners go to Haven for Hope to talk and pray with people residing there, inviting them to receive Christ and join us for Sunday services and a home-cooked meal at the church. The pastor of our homeless ministry has a heart for people experiencing homelessness because he was once a homeless addict himself.

A proven leader in providing healthy meals to older adults, Meals on Wheels San Antonio was awarded a major contract by the city’s Department of Human Services to serve approximately 700,000 meals a year and up to 2,700 meals daily to adults 60 years and older in San Antonio’s neighborhood senior centers starting in January.

Step Two – The site employee finds a comfortable place for the youth to wait while they call the licensed Safe Place agency. For the greater San Antonio area that is Roy Maas Youth Alternatives (RMYA).

Step Three – An RMYA staff member will talk with the youth to get more information and explain that an SAPD officer can escort them to the RMYA Bridge Emergency shelter.  If the child is agreeable, the RMYA staff will contact SAPD to transport the youth to the shelter. 

Step Four – Once at the Bridge, direct-care staff and counselors meet with the youth and provide support. Agency staff ensures the youth and their families receive the help and professional services they need.

This program is for youth under the age of 18 in need of immediate help and safety.

Free.

This center provides programs to help seniors lead active, independent, and engaged lives. This is done through comprehensive nutrition, wellness, and education services.

Services include:

• Transportation services to eligible seniors living within a 5-mile radius of the center

To become eligible to attend this center and participate in services, individuals must reside in Bexar County and meet one of the following criteria:

• 60 years and older
• Under 60 years married to a 60+ participant who attends the center and accompanies the participant to the center
• Under 60 years, disabled, and resides with a 60+ participant and accompanies the participant to the center (only applicable to the HEAL Meal Program)

Bethel houses the Bethel Senior Nutrition Center in Owens Hall which is open daily from 9:00 AM -1:00 PM providing a hot meal, activities, and important information for seniors living in the community.
