San Antonio Community Resource Directory

Our Mission: Promote the dignity and independence of seniors who are in need of nutritious meals, companionship, and Alzheimer’s care.

Our Vision: Eliminate hunger, alleviate isolation, and foster independence among seniors, in partnership with volunteers and the community.

The number of seniors in our country will grow exponentially in the coming years. Meals on Wheels is a proven public-private partnership that effectively addresses the challenges of aging by promoting health and improving quality of life for our nation's most vulnerable seniors. By leveraging the existing Meals on Wheels Network, we have the opportunity to not only keep seniors at home, where they want to be, but also save billions in tax dollars by keeping them out of more costly healthcare alternatives.

Pet Food Assistance: AniMeals, a donation-sustained service, provides monthly deliveries of supplemental pet food to clients who find it hard to maintain the nutrition of their furry companions. Each month we distribute over 5,000lbs of pet food to more than 600 pets. Volunteers deliver pet food the third Saturday of every month and provide another wellness checks on seniors, further enabling their independence.

Veterinary Care Assistance: AniMeals provides access to and payment for veterinary care for pets of current Meals on Wheels San Antonio clients. We help keep our clients' furry companions healthy with the following veterinary services: wellness exams, vaccinations, spay/neuter, and flea prevention. Unfortunately, we are unable to assist with emergency vet visits.

Pet Care Assistance: We aim to support clients who cannot care for their pets due to poor eyesight, injuries, or hospitalization. Our AniMeals volunteers assist clients in caring for their pets through dog walking, temporary fostering, and transportation for grooming services. Volunteers care for these pets for a set period of time as needed by the client.

Individuals who actively receive Meals on Wheels in Bexar County and have companion animals in their home can qualify to receive pet food through the AniMeals Program.

If you would like to request AniMeals for your pet or an elderly neighbor, please call (210) 735-5115 and request to speak with Client Services regarding AniMeals.

If you or your organization is interested in distributing pet food to local seniors or donate pet food (any brand of new wet or dry food for dogs or cats is appreciated), please call (210) 735-5115. We will work with you and your organization on creating a convenient schedule and delivery route or pet food donation arrangement.

Donations are requested via the AniMeals Amazon Wish List or donations of new bags or cans of pet food can be dropped off at Meals on Wheels, 2718 Danbury, 78217, Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30pm.

Comfy Casas provides minor home repairs and various home appliances to low income seniors and disabled adults. Client referrals come from intake assessment coordinators, volunteers and paid delivery drivers. These essential visits enable us to identify and address the clients' home safety needs. The coordinator conducts an initial walk-through in person or over the phone in order to discuss much-needed repairs with the client. Minor home projects may be completed by volunteers. Projects beyond the scope of this service are referred to other organizations.

One of the easiest things we can do is make sure the temperature in our clients' homes is seasonally appropriate. So that means providing ACs and heaters to ensure our clients stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter. In 2020, we have helped 449 senior neighbors age comfortably and safely in their homes!

**We are unable to accommodate major home repairs and electrical repairs.**

To receive services from Comfy Casas:

  • You must be receiving meals from Meals on Wheels San Antonio
  • Minor home repairs require the client to be the homeowner and reside in Bexar County

The Meals on Wheels San Antonio Friendly Visitor Program is a volunteer-based program where the goal is to provide companionship and a meaningful friendship to a homebound citizen in Bexar County. Friendly Visitors are matched with a homebound senior based on similar interests, availability, and gender preference. Friendly Visitor volunteers can visit in-person with a homebound senior and do things such as play games, take a walk, or chat over coffee or tea. The volunteer could also call the client every week to chat about how they are doing. This position is great for individuals who have a heart for helping out others and who would love to spend some free time with a person who needs a Friendly Visitor. Too often, seniors who are no longer able to leave their homes can start to feel isolated, lonely and depressed, which may worsen existing health conditions.

Friendly Visitor volunteers help to alleviate concerns by visiting a homebound senior to provide much needed companionship. Just a simple conversation can make all the difference to lonely person.

Volunteers interested in becoming a Friendly Visitor must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Pass a criminal and sex offender background check
  • Complete a one-hour training/orientation
  • Be a little flexible to care recipients' need for quality time
  • Be able to relate in a positive and warm manner to older adults

Friendly Visitor volunteers are matched with older adults based on personality and interest, so that a bond can easily be developed. Once paired, volunteers are expected to provide friendship and conversation. In some cases, Friendly Visitors offer minor assistance where appropriate (e.g. walks in the neighborhood, computer assistance, etc.).

For more information about receiving services, or to volunteer, please contact Friendly Volunteer Coordinator, Jillian Huskin by email or call 210-735-5115.

Any Meals on Wheels client who is in need of companionship services, may be suffering from depression, or has experienced the loss of a loved one, may be eligible for service.

We deliver meals for lunch, breakfast, and the weekend. In fact, for many of our clients, the nutritious, lunch-time meal we provide is the only meal they eat a day. In order to better maintain the health of these individuals Meals on Wheels also provides packages of breakfast food items and/or specially made frozen meals to offer additional nutrition outside of the lunch-time hours.

Potential new clients are screened over the phone and put on meal service as quickly as possible.

In-Person volunteering is open to everyone who feels comfortable doing so. We do ask that masks are worn when interactive with staff and clients.

At Home: You can also support meal delivery by helping to raise funds for Meals on Wheels San Antonio by way of via social media posts that include a link to the MOWSA website or by asking friends and family to give online.

If you are interested in volunteering, email us, call 210-735-5115,  or use the Contact Form.
