Have you ever read to a dog? Dogs like to be read to, even if they have their eyes closed. Research studies have shown that children whose reading scores lag behind their peers suffer from a fear of reading aloud in the classroom.
This program improves children’s reading and communicating skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog—but not any dog. Our dogs are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team and go to schools and libraries as reading companions for children.
When a dog is listening, a child’s dread is replaced by eager anticipation and learning occurs. The handler is a skilled facilitator, shifting performance pressure away from the child and providing support.
When children read to dogs the experience is magical—there is no other way to describe it!

Computer Technology – is offered to students in the after-school programs as both a skill and an instructional tool. Students develop a basic understanding of computer technology and the Internet, especially for research and report writing. The students also become familiar with standard office software, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, building proficiency, which leads to job opportunities for at-risk youth in San Antonio.
Computer technology as an instructional tool is offered to students with a particular focus on developing and refining reading and math skills. Students can access various programs that develop and enhance their achievement in math and reading.

Registration is now open for summer camp!
Project Transformation operates eight-week summer day camps serving children grades 1-6 in two high-need neighborhoods in San Antonio and two in the Rio Grande Valley.
The focus is on improving literacy and social-emotional development. Each day, children read one-on-one with community volunteers and participate in activity-based literacy intervention. Children also participate in daily enrichment activities including recreational play and exercise, creative arts, and interaction with our young adult interns and community volunteers, who inspire and encourage children daily to make responsible, sound decisions.
Elementary students from low-income families.
MAUC will survey the target audience annually to provide services and educational classes as determined by the family needs. MAUC provides the following services:

- Nutrition Education. Nutrition Education assists parent(s) to understand the connection of good nutrition and physical activity such as exercise to promote good eating habits and family wellness.
- Art for Adults. Free art classes for adults are offered to promote creativity and learn techniques in art acrylic painting on canvas.
- Art for Children. Free art classes for children 7-12 years of age are offered to promote creativity, imagination and learn techniques in drawing and painting. Students also work on creative seasonal activities throughout the year.
- Adult Literacy in Spanish. Centro de Estudios provides the opportunity for immigrant parent(s) from Mexico to continue their education in completing their “Primaria” and “Secundaria “so they may receive a “certificate of completion”.
