Communities In Schools programs surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. Our evidence-based approach, adapted to meet each community’s unique needs, is the basis for our success.

Basic Needs: A student cannot focus in the classroom if he or she is hungry, cold or tired, or cannot see the board. Site coordinators see to it that students' basic needs are met each day.

Enrichment: Our Site coordinators enroll students in a wide variety of after-school and summer programs, field trips and youth conferences to help them gain experience that is essential to meeting college and career goals.

Academic Assistance: Our site coordinators work hard to ensure that students have the resources to progress academically. From providing students with tutors to finding and creating quiet spaces where students can study, we do whatever it takes to create an optimal learning environment for our students.

Life Skills: Through one-on-one workshops, team building, and guest speakers, we work with students to develop social-emotional learning, character education, social skills building, and conflict resolution.

Behavioral Interventions: Many of our students face and overcome difficult obstacles in their lives. However, their survival skills aren’t always effective in the classroom or in the workplace. Our program teaches students positive ways to cope with anger, conflict resolution, and other strategies to keep them focused on school.

Family Engagement: Site coordinators connect families with counselors and social workers to make sure that home is a healthy, nurturing environment where a student can feel safe.

This program is for students at David Crockett Academy.

The first meeting with a counselor is free. A modest fee based on a sliding fee scale is collected for each follow-up session; however, no one is denied service because they cannot pay.

In the Spring of 2022 our  Children’s Cancer Support Center opened it’s doors  to address this problem directly by providing special programming that offers cancer support groups, bereavement support groups, educational workshops, health and wellness support, resources and referrals as well as social activities for families. It’s the city’s first cancer support center exclusively for children.

Our programs are designed to empower parents by providing them with the tools necessary to improve their social connections, give them sense of control and provide a holistic approach to help them navigate their child’s cancer diagnosis. We believe that this will improve the lives and the health and wellness of both the body and mind.

We know that it takes a community to overcome the challenges that come with a childhood cancer diagnosis. For families that are feeling alone or isolated due to their child’s diagnosis, we believe that  they will  find the support they need when they come to the Children’s Cancer Support Center.

The Children’s Cancer Support Center provides resources and support for families that have a child diagnosed with cancer by taking a holistic approach to help in all areas including mental and social factors affecting the entire family.

Programs offered at the center include the following:

  • Mental Health Support Services - support and networking groups for cancer families and bereaved cancer families
  • Resources & Referrals - connecting members to other services in the community
  • Health and wellness programs- through strategic partnerships with the community
  • Educational Workshops - presentations by experts in their field
  • Social Activities - fun social events for children and their families
  • Financial Assiatnce-Financial assistance may be available for families who have a child undergoing active treatment.

Calendar of events can be viewed here.

To qualify, families must have a child who has been diagnosed with cancer and is currently receiving treatment in San Antonio.

Application can be found here.

Services are provided for FREE and at no cost to families of children diagnosed with cancer.

  • Adults age 18 and over
  • Court mandated

Community Mental Health Center

Our Outpatient Program continues to provide support and resources as clients demonstrate symptom improvement and prepare to transition from group therapy to individual services.

Outpatient clients attend up to 19 hours per week.  This schedule empowers clients to establish or maintain independent activities while continuing to receive encouragement and support from their therapy groups.  Participation in our Outpatient Program is determined by presenting concerns and improvement in symptom management and is subject to insurance benefits.

For clients who demonstrate symptom improvement and prepare to transition from group therapy to individual services.

Our program serves as a step down from inpatient care, allowing clients to receive services during the day and return to their homes in the afternoon.  PHP is intended for clients who are experiencing a significant increase or change in symptoms but do not require hospitalization.

PHP is also appropriate for clients who have recently been discharged from an inpatient program. Our PHP includes 4 sessions of group therapy, 5 days per week. Attending daily therapy allows for structure and consistency as clients stabilize and establish successful coping skills.
