Believe It Foundation (Nonprofit )

In 2008 the Believe It Foundation was formed by Andrew McAllister for the purpose of promoting the inclusion of physically challenged children. Far too often these children are needlessly excluded from opportunities to participate with others when a little extra effort is all that is necessary.

Attending a major sporting event, taking a family trip, participating in Scouting, or going to summer camp can all be life changing experiences for any child, especially if physically challenged. “I know because I enjoyed these experiences and many more”, declares Andrew. “In every case, it was due to someone or some organization willing to be inclusive.”

The Foundation has continued to work with Kinetic Kids, a San Antonio non-profit organization that provides safe, healthy recreation opportunities for children with physical and mental differences.

Centro Cultural Aztlan (Nonprofit )

Centro Cultural Aztlan was established in 1977, by a group of young community organizers active in the Chicano movement and eager to extend its message of pride and empowerment.

The vision of those that founded Centro Cultural Aztlan was to build upon the tradition of Chicano and Indigenous culture by creating programs that would involve local artists and increase public awareness of their work.

Participants in our programs represent the full spectrum of the arts: poets and other writers, performing artists, musicians, as well as visual artists. Some are students; others are emerging professionals. Whether they perform their work on stage or hang it on the wall, we provide them with the means of expression: materials and instruction or display space, an open mike or a festival stage.

Centro Cultural Aztlan provides a venue for established and emerging artists, local residents and visitors to participate in cultural activities that include fine-arts exhibits, discussions, literary events and community pride celebrations designed to enrich and inspire.

AugustHeart (Nonprofit )

AugustHeart is a 501(c)(3) providing free heart screenings to teenagers to identify selected heart abnormalities in an effort to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac arrest.

Sudden cardiac arrest in youth remains the leading cause of non-traumatic sudden death in young adults, often happening without signs or symptoms and proving fatal 92% of the time. We know that the thoughtful use of a few simple tests can identify the most common cardiac conditions predisposing a young person to sudden cardiac arrest or death. The consequence of not performing these screens is to leave at-risk youth to their own fate - an action that is not acceptable to us when a viable alternative exists.

What we screen for:

HYPERTROPHIC CARDIOMYOPATHY

DILATED CARDIOMYOPATHY

AORTIC ROOT ANEURYSM

LONG QT SYNDROME

WOLFF-PARKINSON-WHITE (WPW) SYNDROME

This Is How We Do It:

During each screening, we perform an electrocardiogram (ECG) on every student and if necessary an echocardiogram (ECHO). Screenings are administered by certified ECHO sonographers and ECG technicians. These simple, non-invasive tests allow skilled cardiologists to evaluate the structure and electrical activity of the heart to identify students who might be at risk of a cardiac event. Upon review, any teenager having an abnormal screen may be offered the opportunity to undergo a more thorough evaluation so that a plan for care can be established. We assure each teenager’s confidentiality, privacy and individual modesty is respected throughout all aspects of the screening.
