Volunteer and Support Opportunities near

San Antonio Community Resource Directory

Music: Musicians and singers from both CUB members and our partner churches bring contemporary Christian music on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings. If you have been blessed with a gift to sing or play an instrument, consider offering it back to God through us.

Food: Churches and community groups purchase, prepare, and serve a nutritious meal three days a week. Smaller groups and individuals partner with them to help serve these meals after evening service.

Hospitality: Our Hospitality Ministry consists of many "helping" positions in which members from our partner churches and the homeless community can serve.

Peacemakers: Ushers help to guide attendees through our church services and into our feeding/clothing ministries after dinner. They assist the staff by providing information about our program and oversight for the facilities, parking, and peaceful evening operations.

Greeters: Greeters help to minister the love of God by welcoming attendees at the front door, offering them water to hydrate, and directing them to the bag checking area and sanctuary. Many days, the smile or word of kindness given by our Greeters may be the first act of love they’ve seen.

Clothes: After a balanced meal, individuals can receive a change of clothes, hygiene products, or special items we may have in stock (like blankets, hats, and gloves in winter months). This ministry depends on community donations year-round to operate.

Education: Developing and providing Christ-centered education is one of our current goals. If you are interested in helping with Christian education, contact us.

Are you an attorney or other professional looking to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others? Consider joining our pro bono program! With over 2.6 million eligible residents in Southwest and Central Texas, the demand for legal aid is high, and we need your help to meet it.

Currently, there's almost one legal aid lawyer for every 21,000 potential clients in our area. By volunteering your time and expertise, you can make a real impact on the lives of those who would otherwise struggle to access justice. In 2021, our PAI program helped over 1,000 clients with a range of legal issues, including family law, housing, wills, probate, and alternatives to guardianships.

In our attempt to build communal ties with various groups of people, our community building takes on a number of forms. These groups are the resident volunteers, outside volunteers, the support community, the families, and the wider San Antonio Community.

Resident Volunteer:

For those individuals who wish to experience the volunteer lifestyle for a year or two, there is the option of becoming a resident volunteer. Resident volunteers dedicate a minimum of 6 months to 2 years as a full-time volunteer. The resident volunteers are the ones who keep everything running and are in charge of all day-to-day operations.

Resident volunteers all share common living space at Faith House. They participate in and oversee the physical work at the Catholic Worker House. Because they live and work together as a team, it is important that they communicate with one another, share common recreational activities and meet regularly to discuss business and philosophy.

Day Volunteer:

Many volunteers commit themselves to help out on on specific day each week which gives them a good opportunity to be a part of what goes on in the Catholic Worker Community without having to live the lifestyle of a resident volunteer.

Support Community:

The support community is a group of San Antonians who commit to using their individual gifts and talents to meeting the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of the resident volunteers and House Coordinator. The support community meets monthly to find out about these needs and plays a big part in the welcoming and orienting of new volunteers, as well as hosting a celebration/congratulations at the end of their time of service. In addition, the support community members acquire donations for specific needs that arise and who serve as a think-tank to offer creative advice to the volunteers.

If you are interested in becoming a resident volunteer, please give us a call at: (210) 224-7736 (you can leave a message if no one answers).

Our impact is only possible with the support of volunteers.

As a community, we have a larger impact together. Year-round, volunteers gather from all over San Antonio for large group projects, one-day events, and project-based service days.

Volunteering with Family Service is sure to align with your passions and utilize your specific skills in giving back to the community. There’s a range of projects from "adopting" one of our early childhood education centers and visiting once-a-month to projects centered on national days, like reading awareness, to beautification and painting of our classrooms and service centers to donation drives for our families.

KidzTime is an opportunity for volunteers and their children to engage with the children at Strong Foundation in activities while their parents attend life skill classes. It is much more than childcare, it is relational-spending quality time with the children to encourage them and to show them the love of Christ. The kids love it, and so will you!

What you will do:

  • Play with children! We have a basketball court, balls, fort, swings, slides, and bikes.
  • You can organize games or maybe bring a simple craft. (Avoid stickers, and markers or paints that are not washable.)
  • Snacks and drinks are always appreciated. (Please avoid common allergy products such as nuts, etc.
  • KidzTime is rain or shine. The rain plan would be to move inside with activities such as movies, games, and other table activities.

Communities In Schools of San Antonio partners with companies across San Antonio to offer the Inspire U program.

This program connects 10-20 corporate mentors with high school students, providing them workplace exposure while developing skills that prepare them for a future career. Businesses are matched with a local high school where students visit their workplace monthly during their four-year high school journey.

Program Overview:
There are 8 sessions each year in which students travel once a month as a group to the partnering business during lunchtime. Our CIS-SA Site Coordinator will guide each 1.5-hour session with activities that include a lunch/social etiquette piece, planning for post-graduation, as well as time to develop the mentor and mentee relationship. Mentors serve as the positive role models our students need to help them plan their futures, showing them the value of an education. In a recent survey, our mentors reported they found it easy to engage with our students, they felt more motivated and productive at work as well as had a better understanding of the education system and the obstacles that affect at-risk youth.

Corporate partners typically cover a minimal investment to fund bus transportation and lunch for students. Due to the structure of the program, companies are asked to commit to support a class through their four years of high school.

We are grateful to the San Antonio Area Foundation and Bexar County for their additional support of this program.

A community organization can only thrive in its mission when the community is in support of us 100%.

Giving your time to make a difference in a child's life is one of the greatest gifts a person can give. Our children crave adults who take an interest in them. Nothing can be more precious and enduring than the happiness you can create in the world by being a part of a child’s growth. Please take the opportunity to visit with us and become involved in our mission.

All you need is a desire to make a difference. If you have a passion for making a difference, becoming involved in your community, and helping our inner-city youth then volunteering is a wonderful way to show your support.

Founded in 1999 by Rev. Dr. E. Thurman Walker, the Community of Churches for Social Action (CCSA) is a coalition of pastors who came together in an unprecedented way - including themselves among other unique faith-based initiatives across this country that are making steam roller impacts - and who cross denominational lines.

CCSA is designed to be the empowered voice that speaks into being that which the Lord desires for His people in ways that are beneficial blessings for all. CCSA believes God has called them into a coalition relationship to support and encourage persons, organizations, and structures, which are trying to make life better for people, and to challenge and change those systems that promote spiritual, economic, and social poverty in our communities.
