Residential Housing near

Online and Virtual Assistance

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are small, naturally affordable, and climate-friendly homes tucked discreetly within residential neighborhoods.

LISC is excited to help make (ADUs) more broadly available as a housing choice for San Antonians. This free online guide includes:

  • What are ADUs?
    • Types of ADUs
  • The Many Benefits of ADUs
  • The National Resurgence of ADUs
    • Re-legalizing ADUs
  • Financing an ADU
  • ADU Education
  • Can I build an ADU?
    • Improving the Code
    • City of San Antonio Code Table

They’re a great match for smaller households and can be created through basement or garage conversions, additions, or new construction of backyard tiny homes.

ADUs can be paired with affordable housing programs to serve low-income families, other vulnerable populations, and first-time homeowners.

Notice

The waiting list for Housing Choice Vouchers is currently closed. No new vouchers will be are available to be issued at this time.

The HCV program (also known as Section 8) is the government’s primary program to assist income-eligible households with the opportunity to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing.

The Housing Authority of Bexar County (HABC) is the public housing agency that administers the Housing Choice Voucher program in Bexar County, and adherence to HUD regulations.

Participants in HABC’s Housing Choice Voucher program may lease an approved housing unit where vouchers are accepted.  The participant pays a portion of the rent (according to household income), and HABC pays the difference.

Notification to the general public when pre-applications are taken will be made through various media and social sources.

Eligibility is determined based on the total annual income and family size of the household. Annual income cannot exceed 50% of the area median income for Bexar County. Family assets are also taken into consideration when determining eligibility.

Pre-applications are taken during waiting list events. (Currently no one is eligible for a new voucher as the waiting list is currently closed)

Participants in HABC’s Housing Choice Voucher program may lease an approved housing unit where vouchers are accepted. The tenant is expected to comply with the lease and the HCV program requirements, pay their share of rent on time, maintain the housing unit in good condition and notify HABC of any changes in household income or composition.  Failure to comply with these requirements may subject the family to an informal hearing. Hearing decisions can vary from immediate corrective measures implemented to termination from the HCV program.

Our Casas Resident Council allows first-time home buyers to purchase an affordable, single-family home in San Antonio.

Our Casas has provided affordable housing, homebuyer education, and foreclosure prevention services to low-moderate income families since 1990. Our HUD-certified Housing Counseling Agency and City certified Community Housing Development Organization, prepares families for homeownership, and prevents foreclosure.

Upcoming Affordable Home Projects:

-Westside/Kayton Homes--expected to be completed by late 2025, this project consists of three, 3BR, 2BA homes in the Southeast part of San Antonio.

-Apache Creek/Dario Chapa Casitas--Expected to be completed by early 2026, this project continues our production of affordable casitas in the near Westside.

The Executive Director of the nonprofit says tackling the affordable housing issue this way helps not just the family, but also improves the neighborhood by removing an empty lot putting a house there.

“It’s helping a family meet that American dream of homeownership that is what has been driving the country forever, and we want to make sure that everyone has an opportunity,” said Zeke Romo, Former Executive Director of Our Casas Resident Council. "You bringing a vacant lot into the tax rolls for example this home over 100 years will bring in with taxes $5000 per year and no telling other kind of income with the family shopping in the neighborhood and eating at restaurants all over the west side.”

The nonprofit is looking to purchase more vacant lots in different parts of the city where affordable housing is desperately needed.

The organization is already accepting applications for purchase.

“A house is a symbol of opportunity, it’s a symbol of safety, it’s a sanctuary for families,”
-Mayor Ron Nirenberg

As the cost of housing continues to cause economic pressure on San Antonio residents, partnerships with Our Casas Affordable Homes Project are vital,” District 5 Councilwoman Teri Castillo said. “Our families deserve quality housing, and the addition of this home with a casita in the 78207 shows our City’s commitment to supporting San Antonio residents by providing accessible housing.”

The creation of a family home is the culmination of systemwide efforts to align our funding streams, partnerships, and resident services to promote homeownership and reinvestment back into our neighborhoods.

In 2017, the Office of Urban Redevelopment (OURSA) sold five lots to Our Casas to build five single-family homes that would be sold to eligible first-time homebuyers who are earning 80 percent of the Area Median Income or less, which is an annual income of $63,750 for a family of three.

Affordable homeownership through infill development demonstrates the power of collaborating with our housing partners to expand access to housing stability and opportunity for our families.

Fisher Houses are owned and operated by the Department of Defense or Department of Veterans Affairs in association with the attached hospital.

The Fisher House provides cost-free accommodations so Veterans families/caregivers can be close to their hospitalized loved ones during a medical crisis. The South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) Fisher House in San Antonio, Texas, is a beautiful “home away from home" and provides high quality temporary lodging for families of Veterans receiving inpatient care (medical crisis) at STVHCS. When a loved one is injured or ill, the Fisher House unites families and relieves the financial and emotional strain of being away from home.

Each Fisher House is between 7 and 21 suites and can accommodate 16 to 42 family members.

They feature a spacious common kitchen, laundry facilities, spacious dining room and a living room with a library and toys for children. Newer houses are 100% wheelchair accessible and include elevators.

Fisher Houses are set up to encourage a sense of community while giving private respite to tired families.
You can make your favorite meal in the gourmet kitchen before turning in for a good night’s sleep.

A Fisher House is a temporary lodging residence and is not a treatment facility, permanent residence, hospice, or counseling center.

Safety is important! There is a key or fob to get into the Fisher House and a key to get into your private suite. VA campus police or military police are in the area to ensure everyone’s safety.

Meals are not provided but generous volunteer groups often bring in large dinners for the house.

Pets are not permitted. Only certified and specifically tasked service animals are allowed in the Fisher House. The service animal must belong to the registered guest and requires approval prior to check-in.

Rooms are assigned on a first come, first served, space available basis.

No additional guests are permitted in the rooms without prior approval.

All referrals to the Fisher House should be done in advance and is most often completed by a Social Worker. Referrals are based on eligibility criteria being met and room availability. Fisher House staff will confirm guests' reservation 24-48 hours prior to the check-in date.

Fisher House referrals cannot be made by Fisher House staff.  To request accommodations for Fisher House lodging, please contact the Veteran's assigned Social Worker to request a referral. If you do not have an assigned social worker, your provider (primary care physician or nurse practitioner) is able to make the referral as well.

The criterion for occupancy is that the guest be either a member of the family or designated care giver of the patient hospitalized at these facilities or a patient in an outpatient status.

Children under the age of 18 are permitted to stay at the Fisher House but must not be left unattended in the Fisher House.

To contact the assigned social worker, provider, or nurse practitioner, call the Consolidated Outpatient Appointment Center at 210-949-9702.

All lodging fees for guest families at this house are paid through a grant from Fisher House Foundation.
