Asking for help can be difficult, but everyone needs help sometimes. Counseling can be of benefit if you are depressed or anxious; if you are experiencing grief, trauma, or abuse; or if you are simply struggling with everyday life. Counseling can be a difficult process but also a deeply rewarding one. River City Advocacy’s counseling program serves New Braunfels, Comal County, and the surrounding areas.
We offer individual, couples, and family counseling by appointment.
Fees for counseling are set based on income and family size, ensuring that working families and others in need in our community have the opportunity to afford the care they need.
All payments are due at the time of service.
- Couples Therapy
In couple’s therapy, clients are able to work to improve relationship quality with the help of a trained therapist in a 45-50 minute session. Couples explore what is helping or hindering their relationship, how to set and communicate healthy boundaries, and can increase feelings of connection and closeness during this process. This type of therapy can help identify what may be causing strain within a relationship or address specific problems with various forms of therapeutic intervention.
- Family Therapy
Family therapy is a type of group therapy that works with family members to identify familial patterns or behaviors that cause relational strain or individual issues. With the help of a therapist trained in familial counseling, family members can focus on changing destructive patterns and behavior, improving relationships, and enhancing communication. Over the course of family therapy sessions, family members can be guided through problem-solving techniques that can fuel solid, stable, healthier, and happier relationships with one another.

- Have you done everything you can to save and rehabilitate your marriage?
Do you have unfinished emotional business that you would like to resolve? - Have you researched, planned, and prepared yourself legally for divorce?
- Are you ready to adopt a new standard of conduct with your children?
- Are you willing to create a new relationship as a co-parent?
Have you ever observed couples that seem crazy in love and you wish that your relationship looked like that? Do you feel like you are missing a significant piece of the puzzle of a happy, long-lasting relationship? Or, maybe you feel like you have tried everything you can think of, to save your marriage but nothing works. And, if asked, you might define your relationship as ongoing conflict and turmoil.
Although puzzling, it may be that sometimes you feel that your spouse is a stranger. After all, your marriage did not start this way. You used to know your spouse so well and everything was going great. It is overwhelming to experience the feeling of uncertainty about your relationship status and where it is headed.
Many of the couples I work with have lost the ability to talk to each other with respect and understanding. Several of them reach the point where it is less painful to stop talking to each other altogether, instead of discussing the same issues over and over again. If you are in this place, or it feels like you are heading there, give me a call. Address the difficult topics and begin to uncover the many reasons that you began your relationship in the first place.

Worldwide Marriage Encounter emphasizes communication between husband and wife, who spend a weekend together away from the distractions and the tensions of everyday life to concentrate on each other. Its mission of renewal in the Church and change in the world is to assist couples and priests in living fully intimate and responsible relationships by providing them with a Catholic "experience" and ongoing community support for such a lifestyle.
The Marriage Encounter Community (also called Love Circle, circle, board, etc.) is a monthly gathering that supports couples who have made a Marriage Encounter Weekend by encouraging their Sacramental Unions with prayer, presentation, dialogue, and sharing of feelings. The presentation deals with some aspects of the marital relationship. The community supports the Church by furthering another ministry within the parish and the local area of Marriage Encounter by promoting and assisting with the weekend.
Marriage Encounter is not a retreat, a marriage clinic, or group sensitivity. It's a unique approach aimed at revitalizing Christian Marriage.

No matter the cause, distress in a relationship can create undue stress, tension, sadness, worry, fear and other problems. You may hope your relationship troubles just go away on their own. But left to fester, a bad relationship may only worsen and eventually lead to physical or psychological problems, such as depression. A bad relationship can also create problems on the job and affect other family members or even friendships as people feel compelled to take sides.
Here are typical issues that marriage counseling can help you and a spouse or partner cope with:
- Infidelity
- Divorce
- Substance abuse
- Physical or mental conditions
- Same-sex relationship issues
- Cultural clashes
- Finances
- Unemployment
- Blended families
- Communication problems
- Sexual difficulties
- Conflicts about child rearing
- Infertility
- Anger
- Changing roles, such as retirement
- Domestic violence
Marriage counseling may also be of help in cases of domestic violence or abuse. However, if the abuse or violence has escalated to the point that you fear for your safety or that of your children, consider contacting the police or a local shelter or crisis center. Don’t rely on marriage counseling alone to resolve these problems.
Adult couples, partners or married couples.
You don’t need to have a troubled relationship to seek therapy. Marriage counseling can also help couples who simply want to strengthen their bonds and gain a better understanding of each other.
Marriage counseling can also help couples who plan to get married. This pre-marriage counseling can help you achieve a deeper understanding of each other and iron out differences before a union is sealed.
