Financial literacy is a foundational piece to building a sustainable future.

As part of our mentoring program, we offer a financial literacy program that consists of the following:

1) Faith and Finance Curriculum: Participants enrolled in Financial Literacy are provided with the knowledge and tools to make sound financial decisions. The Faith and Finance curriculum is used and the following topics are discussed in 6 weeks.

  • How does money affect our relationships?
  • How do values and attitudes shape money habits?
  • How to overcome financial obstacles?
  • How to set savings goals?
  • How to create a basic budget?
  • How to save money by living simply?
  • How to include joyful giving in your budget?
  • How to avoid debt and know your credit score?
  • When to borrow money in healthy ways?
  • How to open and use a bank account?
  • How to prepare for emergencies?
  • How to stick to new money habits?

2) Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University: This nine-week Dave Ramsey Financial Literacy program is offered to participants for more in-depth information about aspects of financial stability. The topics discussed are emergency funds, paying off debt, three-to-six months of savings, investing, paying off children’s college, paying off a mortgage, and building wealth. These topics are considered David Ramsey’s 7 baby steps to financial freedom.

The Financial and Housing Recovery Center is part of the Recovery and Resiliency Plan for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The plan includes a section on community resilience, which ensures that households and businesses affected by COVID-19 have the resources and tools to become financially resilient and better prepared to withstand future economic challenges.

Financial Benefits Navigation
Through Financial Benefits Navigation we work with federal, state, and local benefits providers and with community partners, to include referral services such as unemployment, TANF, CHIP, housing authority waitlist registration, utility assistance, rent/mortgage assistance, etc.

Financial Counseling
Financial Counselors through the Financial and Housing Recovery Center, assist residents with budgeting, debt management, credit report education, and linking to positive products through Bank On San Antonio, etc.

Afterschool Programming

BGCSA offers a weekday Afterschool Program for kids all through the school year! Our Clubhouses are open weekdays, 3:00 PM – 6:30 PM, making it an easy choice for parents. The daily schedule begins with Power Hour™, an hour dedicated to homework help and completion.

Kids then rotate through age-appropriate activities! Kids will be able to enjoy gym and playground time, sports practices, reading or math tutoring, fine arts, and more! Our preteens and teenagers have more guided activities, such as college visits, career skills building, driving simulations, and leadership and community-service-focused clubs.

BGCSA offers more support by offering transportation to Clubhouse locations. Snacks and/or meals are also provided to all kids before they head home.

Summer Programming

Our Summer Program provides structured activities and a safe place, Monday – Friday, from 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM, during 6 weeks of summer break. Similar to our Afterschool Program, youth are engaged in age-appropriate activities focused on curbing the summer learning loss, building character, and forming healthy habits.

Additionally, kids get to attend Club-sponsored field trips to indoor swimming pools, local businesses, outdoor parks, and community attractions. Have no fear parents, kids won’t come home hungry! Healthy and balanced meals and snacks are provided throughout the day during summer programs.

Money Matters: Make It Count helps teens gain useful knowledge and skills on various aspects of financial literacy, including budgeting, saving and investing, credit and debt, entrepreneurship and planning for college. Money Matters is made possible through funding from Charles Schwab Foundation

The Teen Personal Finance Guide is a fun, innovative and useful tool for teens. It includes practical tips and activities to help teens learn the important skills of balancing a checkbook, creating a budget and investing for college and retirement. The guide also provides teens with basic entrepreneurship information for those interested in starting businesses.

Westside Education & Training Center (WETC), located in Westside San Antonio, in the heart of the Edgewood community, opened in 2006 to improve the education and skill levels of students and community residents served by bridging the gap between education and high-skill, high-wage jobs through the alignment of education and workforce development efforts to ensure students and residents with opportunities to acquire the advanced education and skills necessary to be competitive in the workforce and to support the region’s targeted driver industries and the availability of trained and ready workforce.

Unity House is a safe, sober environment for residents to learn to grow spiritually and make the necessary changes in their lives and daily routines.

12 Steps and Life Skills: Our common goal is to build a solid foundation of recovery and to practice the 12 steps and principles in our everyday lives.

Credit Recovery: We also provide seminars to educate residents on certain tools to help fast-track their credit scores and finances to a better standing.
