What is Physical Therapy?

Physical Therapy (PT) is an intervention that focuses on helping individuals (in TLC’s case, children) with physical impairments that are impacting their mobility, balance, coordination, quality of movement, or age-appropriate gross motor skills.

Pediatric physical therapists examine and treat children from birth to age 18 for symptoms related to genetic, neurological, and orthopedic conditions. At TLC Kids Therapy, a typical session may include manual techniques to address the limitations of myofascial or soft tissue mobility, positional techniques to facilitate postural alignment, and development of gross motor skills such as rolling, crawling, walking, jumping, riding a bike, climbing stairs, climbing stairs, and transitions between positions.

Other common interventions include flexibility training to maximize range of motion, general strength training through everyday play,  and gait training to improve running and walking patterns. Family education is essential to success in physical therapy and a recommended individualized home exercise program will be given to each family to ensure the carry-over of skilled physical therapy intervention.

Physical therapy commonly collaborates with occupation and speech therapy (if needed) to optimize your child’s success in the home and school environment.

Speech Therapy (ST) is an intervention that focuses on improving a child’s speech and abilities to understand and express language.

Therapy includes coordinating the mouth to produce sounds to form words, increasing a child’s ability to understand and express language via different communication modalities (e.g., written, pictorial, body, signs, and the use of language through alternative communication systems such as computers, and iPads), and overall help strengthen and coordinate the muscles in the mouth for speech and feeding purposes.

In the latter, ST also focuses on assessing a child’s chewing skills, and whether they are moving their tongue correctly to thoroughly break down the food and propel it back for the swallow.

Hospice focuses on caring, not curing and in most cases care is provided in the patient's home. Hospice care also is provided in freestanding hospice centers, hospitals, nursing homes, and other long-term care facilities.

The hospice team develops a care plan that meets each patient's individual needs for pain management and symptom control.

Among its major responsibilities, the interdisciplinary hospice team:

  • Manages the patient’s pain and symptoms;
  • Assists the patient with the emotional psychosocial and spiritual aspects of dying;
  • Provides needed drugs, medical supplies, and equipment;
  • Coaches the family on how to care for the patient;
  • Delivers special services like speech and physical therapy when needed;
  • Makes short-term inpatient care available when pain or symptoms become too difficult to manage at home, or the caregiver needs respite time; and
  • Provides bereavement care and counseling to surviving family and friends.

AIM provides educational-based services to public schools, private schools, preschools, daycares, universities, city and state entities, and privately to individuals and families.

Some examples of these services range from individual evaluations, therapy, professional development, audits, instructional assistance, coaching, wellness programs, and community initiatives.

  • SPED360 - Ensure Federal and State compliance, while also ensuring ongoing training is provided to staff. Our admins will audit all new incoming records at the beginning of the year
  • SCHOOL - Whether you are a special education director, principal, or superintendent, we want to help your students. We partner with public schools, private schools, and universities to provide holistic services to learners. Our team consists of individuals who come from a background of working in education. Some examples of what we are capable of doing are doing just one evaluation, covering therapy for maternity leave, filling a vacancy for the year, managing a department, or providing multi-series professional development across the district.
  • REMOTE - Remote Education Services Are Your Best "Plan B" Welcome to the new normal. Learning has gotten pushed out of the classroom and it’s happening in new ways, new contexts, and new locations as we speak. We’re all rising to the challenge of continuing to educate our kids, despite the obstacles the pandemic has put in our paths.
  • FAMILY - In San Antonio, we run a private clinic out of our office. This allows parents, individuals, or organizations seeking to help a struggling learner access a team that normally would reside in a school. These services range from evaluations to therapy, and counseling. At the root of it, we seek to ensure that an individual can succeed at learning.

In San Antonio, we run a private clinic out of our office. This allows parents, individuals, or organizations seeking to help a struggling learner access a team that normally would reside in a school. These services range from evaluations to therapy, and counseling. At the root of it, we seek to ensure that an individual can succeed at learning.

Learners come in all forms, preschool kids, school-aged kids, college students, adult students, and everyone in between. Learning applies to not only the school but also to the developmental tasks needed to flourish in our lives.

AIM Knows that not all learners can get support from a public school system, where the majority of this evaluation/therapy happens. We also know as many families turn to medical providers, there is a difference between the way learning issues are identified and treated in the medical world and the educational world. They speak different languages. Learners and their families are often caught in the middle. We built Spark Assessment Center for learners who couldn’t or wouldn’t use a school for testing and diagnosis. My, how times have changed. Now, a typical Spark customer visits the office for:

  • Learning evaluations for private school students
  • Autism evaluation
  • ADHD evaluations
  • Testing for communication disorders
  • Updated testing for accommodations in college
  • Testing for accommodations on things like SAT, MCAT, LSAT, etc
  • IEEs
  • Complex, overlapping issues or differential diagnosis - Is the issue - dyslexia or AD/HD? Is this depression or a learning disability?
  • Further exploration of a medical diagnosis

Services for students with disabilities are available on every campus. Except for a small population, most students with disabilities attend their home campus. A wide variety of services and levels of support are provided on each campus. Supports may be provided within the general education classroom by a co-teacher, a paraprofessional, or a tutor.

Modified curriculum materials are provided when necessary, and students are given specialized instruction outside of the general education classroom when needed. Each student truly has an “individualized education plan” tailored just for them

The Special Education Information Center (SPEDTex) provides resources and interactive features for increasing family awareness of disabilities and special education processes, to improve partnerships between schools and families.

With the aid of psychological testing, psychologists have more information available to them to explore possible diagnoses than do general practitioners or psychiatrists. This improves the accuracy of a diagnosis and helps you and your doctors make more informed treatment decisions.

Psychological Testing for Adults and Adolescents:

Psychological testing can help you identify and understand thoughts, feelings, and behaviors you may have that are causing suffering. Testing can:

  • Determine the severity and origin of memory, attention, and concentration difficulties (anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance use, and PTSD can all impact memory and concentration)
  • Identify thoughts and feelings that interfere with social and relationship functioning
  • Identify cognitive strengths and weaknesses

We offer a variety of computer-based psychiatric testing in our office to ensure the best standard of care when diagnosing our patients. Conner’s Computer Performance testing (CPT3) is used to aid in the diagnoses of patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The test can be given starting at the age of 4 and up. The test is used to assess the patients’ attention-related problems based on performance in four areas: attentiveness, impulsivity, sustained attention, and vigilance. If you are struggling with a lack of focus, this test may be right for you.

Personality assessment inventory (PAI testing) is used to aid in clinical diagnoses of a broad range of mental disorders including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenic disorders, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, and substance abuse disorders. If you believe you are suffering from one of these disorders, this test may be right for you.

CNS testing is a neurocognitive test that can be used to efficiently and objectively assess a broad spectrum of brain function performance. This testing can be used to aid in the diagnoses of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders and establish a neurocognitive baseline for patients to guide us in later treatment decisions. If you are struggling with memory decline, this test may be right for you.

  • Learning Disabilities

A competent, comprehensive evaluation of cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses is an essential component for enhancing academic success at any age. Our psychologists and neuropsychologists evaluate individuals from preschool through college and beyond.

Click here for more information on LD Testing.

  • Neuropsychological Evaluation

Neuropsychological testing is the only evaluation approach that looks at the ability to learn new information. It also allows us to evaluate the functional integrity of the brain in individuals with neurological conditions. Neuropsychologists play an increasingly important role in evaluating normal and disordered learning in children, adolescents, and adults. Evaluating the memory and other cognitive changes reported by many following COVID-19 exposure, including those with "long COVID" is also the job of the neuropsychologist.

  • Psychological Evaluation

A psychological evaluation can address many different types of emotional and behavioral issues. Emotional health is important to our quality of life and to the quality of life for those around us.  Our doctors provide evaluation for ADHD, anxiety, autism, bipolar disorder, depression, OCD, other mood disorders, and nearly every other diagnostic category that is important to investigate.

Our experience enables us to offer effective outpatient, individualized, psychological care. We treat many mental health disorders and provide a neutral ground to individuals, families, and couples.

Our focus is to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. We achieve this by providing a neutral safe space, listening to your concerns, and customizing a treatment plan.

Depression and Anxiety: Depression, fear, and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions that we can experience at some point in our lives. Through counseling and treatment, we can help you recover the motivation, perspective, and joy that you once had in your life.

Trauma and PTSD: Many individuals can experience symptoms associated with painful and traumatic circumstances (combat, sexual assault, abuse). Anxiety, fear, and hopelessness are a few emotions that can linger post traumatic events. We can help you overcome these symptoms and guide you through the process of grief and healing

Relationships: Relationship counseling can be beneficial to couples and families who are looking to strengthen their emotional connection, in all stages of their relationship. Therapy sessions are held with both couples and families to discuss issues and solutions.

Child and Adolescent: Childhood and adolescence are a struggle for many. Often circumstances or the same depression, fear, and anxiety impact adults and also prove to be problematic for children. Through counseling and treatment children and adolescents grow and develop.

Parenting: Therapy can include effective approaches to the challenges of parenting. The goal is to foster appropriate growth and development in the child from a positive perspective.

Developmental Delays: Developmental delays impact individuals and families. Our goal is to encourage adult living skills, improve social interaction, foster independence, and involve positive family interaction.
