Project Access is a unique program offered to individuals with documented intellectual disabilities. It is designed to support the student in accessing postsecondary education and developing skills for gainful employment. Curriculum completion is dependent on the student’s ability to complete the courses in a semester.

Parents Night Out is offered on Friday evenings from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. This program provides care for children with special needs and their siblings. Parents use this time to rest, pursue their own interests, or have a date night to reconnect with their significant other. This vital respite helps strengthen families and relationships.

We have innovative technologies that assist visually impaired patrons in utilizing the digital programs we offer.

For use outside of the library:

• iPads are available for check out for up to six weeks. These iPads are capable of using Siri, and have a VoiceOver function to open up the apps we offer, such as Hoopla (music, movies, audiobooks), Mango Languages, or cloudLibrary (ebooks and audiobooks).

For use within the library:

• Focus 40 Blue Wireless Braille Display, which connects to computers, iPads, and phones using Bluetooth, allowing navigation through documents and applications using the latest Braille technology.
• The Braille Display also converts text to both contracted braille and un-contracted braille. This text is displayed on a Perkins-style keyboard, which makes it simple to read, as it follows along, mirroring word for word at your own pace.
• The Pearl Portable Reading Solution is essentially a camera on a folding post, which brings visually impaired patrons convenient portable access to any reading material they bring to BiblioTech. The folding camera opens easily and connects to a PC using a USB port, and works with OpenBook Software.
• OpenBook software takes an exact picture of the material, whether it be a book, a newspaper, or a magazine, using the Pearl Portable Reading Solution. It mirrors the image using the Pearl Scanner and reads aloud word for word. OpenBook will adjust the speed and tone of the reader, as well as the size, fonts, and color of the text to make your reading experience more comfortable.

Additionally, we provide:

• Magic Large Print Keyboard, with much larger keys than a standard keyboard.
• JAWS (Job Access With Speech) software, which is a screen reader for Windows that works with most computer applications.
• Magic Zoom, which magnifies the screen so you can zoom in to the desired screen size. Each innovative tool comes with its very own braille instructions, which are available to patrons upon request.

San Antonio Water System’s Courtesy Notice Program offers residential and commercial customers with medical necessity advance notice prior to interruption of service due to nonpayment. This program is intended to allow these customers to contact SAWS so that payment and/or satisfactory payment arrangements can be made to avoid service interruption.

Eligibility:

• Must be a SAWS water and/or sewer customer.
• Must be under a physician’s care or have a household member residing at the property who is under a physician’s care.
• Must have physician’s documentation of medical necessity on file with SAWS. 

How to Apply:

A customer interested in participating in the program must complete an application form provided by San Antonio Water System for this purpose. The account must be in the name of the individual applying, and the applicant must provide documentation acceptable to SAWS to establish and verify identity and medical necessity.

Vocational services for visually impaired

Creating Unique Learning Opportunities.

The Transition to Work program provides individualized vocational and job skills training. Students enroll through local school districts partnerships and parent referrals.

Students engage in a learning environment which encourages them to achieve their individual maximum potential. Students receive hands on learning through simulation of various career situations and job tasks.

• Students must be 16-22 years of age.
• Experience a vision or other disability.
• Be self-sufficient for toileting and eating.
• Travel independently.
• Demonstrate appropriate behavior.

At the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, we provide vocational rehabilitation services that are tailored to meet the needs and interest of each individual. Are highly skilled staff specialize in working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired, as well as those who are uniquely abled. We provide a wide range of services from basic life skills to advanced technical training to help prepare our customers for independence and success in today's employment market.

Our Programs:

Technology Evaluation and Training: We provide evaluations and training on the latest assistive technology avialable, and specialize in training the vision impaired on mainstream software such as Microsoft and Apple, as well as assistive software. In addition, we work with community organizations and businesses to provide training for staff.

Employment Services and Job Placement: We are proud to offer employment services to assist individuals with preparing for, locating, and maintaining suitable employment. We offer assistance and training in job search, resume writing, job application completion, interviewing skills, and vocational adjustment training (VAT).

School of Business: Our School of Business offers 7 hours that are designed to assist students in refining their marketability into today's workforce. We currently offer seminars in over 15 different areas to include: Introduction to Windows 10, Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office Outlook, Microsoft Office PowerPoint, and Zoom.

Available to students attending high school in the state of Texas, Believe It Foundation provides eligible high school seniors or college undergrads a $2500 scholarship to attend the accredited college or university of their choice.

To qualify for the Believe It Foundation Scholarship, applicants:

• Must have a significant physical challenge and may or may not use a wheelchair for mobility. The physical challenge must affect activities of daily living.
•  Must have at least a 3.0 GPA either as a graduating high school senior or in their college coursework.
• Must show financial need
•  Must be applying to, or currently attending, an accredited four or two year college within the United States.
•  Must be a legal resident of the United States.
•  Must submit an application with all required attachments by March 23, 2022. 

The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) provides comprehensive support to Family members with special needs. EFMP takes an all-inclusive approach to coordinate military and civilian community, educational, medical, housing, and personnel services to help Soldiers and their Families with special needs.

An Exceptional Family Member is a Family member with any physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual disorder that requires special treatment, therapy, education, training, or counseling, and meets the eligibility criteria.

Soldiers with Exceptional Family Members are required to register for EFMP and keep enrollment information current. This way, Family needs will be considered during the OCONUS assignments process.

If you’re eligible for EFMP services, Family members must be screened and enrolled when they accompany authorized Soldiers on OCONUS assignments. Screenings include medical records review for all Family members and developmental screening for all children aged 72 months and younger.

Who must enroll in the program?

• Active Army
• U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) Soldiers in the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Program
• Army National Guard (ARNG) AGR personnel serving under authority of 10 USC and 32 USC. Department of the Army civilian employees do not enroll in the program.

You must identify dependent children with special education and medically related service needs and Family members with medical needs each time they process for an assignment to a location outside the United States where Family member travel is authorized at government expense.

We share our home with three or four young adults within the HFA, Asperger, and Neurodiverse communities.

They will acquire and practice the independent living skills they need before assuming the responsibility of living independently.

Our Friday Socials are an opportunity for young adults (18-30ish) within the Asperger, HFA, and Neurodiverse community to have a place to socialize, make friends, and become part of a community of their peers.

The Burleson Center is home to the Special Education 18+ Program. The program is designed to meet the unique needs of students who have graduated from high school and continue to require instruction in employment, education/training, and/or independent living. Students may receive instruction in the community and/or in one or more of the businesses located in the facility.

Psychological Assessment can serve a range of needs. The essential function of assessment, however, is to provide you with a clearer understanding of whether you have an emotional disorder, what that specific disorder might be, and what interventions might be recommended.

I see two different kinds of assessment engagements: diagnostic assessments and personality assessments.

Diagnostic assessments are the most common and serve simply to determine whether the client has any kind of emotional disturbance that could interfere with occupational functioning. This need arises in the context of applications for adoption, law enforcement/security work, and other role determinations. A typical engagement would entail one or two sessions of 1-1 interviewing plus administration of any indicated psychological tests (e.g. the MMPI).

Personality assessments are called on to gain a clearer picture of the dynamics underlying an obvious area of dysfunction. I practice personality assessment using a style known as Therapeutic Assessment (TA). TA is a powerful innovation in the assessment field.

A TA engagement begins with an agenda-setting meeting and is followed by 2-3 sessions of psychological testing using objective personality measures (e.g. the Personality Assessment Inventory, PAI or MMPI-2-RF) and projective measures (e.g. the Thematic Apperception Test, TAT or Rorschach Inkblot Method, RIM). The engagement produces a feedback letter summarizing the findings and recommendations discussed.
