Esperanza’s annual International Peace Market/Mercado Internacional de Paz brings people together in the tradition of open-air markets found in indigenous communities around the world.

The Peace Market fills up two floors of the Esperanza Center and spills out into the patio and onto Evergreen St. with a festive community spirit. El Mercado de Paz gives shoppers direct access to global and local artesanos who sell unique handcrafted goods with themes of peace, social justice, cultural diversity and ecological concerns and it provides an alternative to the hectic holiday shopping offered by malls, big-box stores and impersonal vendors.

The success of Peace Market lies in the selection of vendors who see that the trend towards corporate shopping and mass production is leading to a decline of humanity. Our shoppers interact directly with artists and know that their hard-earned money goes to deserving individuals and the communities they represent.

Live performances as well as a variety of food and drinks for sale makes the day even more enjoyable for gente of all ages.

Other notable guests at the Peace Market include international artisans well known throughout the world. Artisans have included Teresa López Jiménez from Jichitan, Vasquez Family members from Teotitlan, Cristina Antonio Herrera, Irene Aguilar, Cecilia Bautista, Magdalena Pedro Martinez, Enedina Vasquez Cruz, Verónica Lorenzo Quiroz from, Taller Leñateros from Chiapas, and numerous artisans from the Red Binacional Niu Matat Napawika a network of artisan groups from across Mexico.

Noche Azul de Esperanza is our multi-year ongoing series of intimate café style performances with acclaimed singer/songwriter-in-Residence Azul Barrientos. Azul presents a multimedia monthly concert series exploring cultural themes and genres relevant to Afro/Latino/Indigenous cultures, with guest musicians like Jonathan Raveneau, Bett Butler and Joel Dilley, George and Aaron Prado, and Nina Rodriguez.

Featuring a new theme,multimedia presentation, and musical lineup each month, the sounds and genres of Noche Azul have included boleros, rancheras, folklore, tangos, jazz, afro-latin, and much more. Noche Azul showcases traditional Mexican songs while highlighting the cultural influences and interconnections between Latin America, Africa, Spain and Mexico.

Radio Esperanza, 96.5 KEPJ-LPFM-San Antonio, is a low-powered community radio station dedicated to providing social justice organizing and community expression to our listeners. We provide a platform for local news, music, podcasts, and programs produced and presented by women, people of color, the lesbian, gay, trans and queer community, the working class and the poor.

Radio Esperanza empowers buena gente to speak out about injustices through media literacy and equitable access platforms. We are a non-commercial program of the Esperanza Peace & Justice Center, a nonprofit organization. We cover a geographic area within three to five miles of the Esperanza Center at 922 San Pedro Avenue in San Antonio, Texas.

Through our pláticas, we actively lay the groundwork for building strong multicultural, multiracial and bicultural alliances for struggling together towards a better world for all.

The Esperanza provides affordable art and writing workshops, media literacy and cultural/technical skill-building trainings, and cultural tours on a rolling basis throughout the year.

We believe that art can and should be accessible to all and not just to those who can afford it. Using that approach, we coordinate many events around our cultural art programs in order to expose community members to the methods used by many of contemporary artists, but also to allow our guests artists to contribute back.

The Youth Development Department of Ella Austin Community Center is a year-round project, composed of two programs: the After School Program and the Summer Enrichment Program.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The After School Program offers homework assistance to students, aged 6 – 14 years of age (Elementary – Middle School grades). It provides educational and recreational activities, fine arts (art, music, drama, and creative writing), library usage, and a computer lab.

Students are provided with after-school hot meals catered by the San Antonio Food Bank.

Positive self-esteem is promoted through motivational speakers, field trips to college campuses, and the celebration of cultures.

The program tracks the academic development of each student by observing their grade cards and progress reports from their schools. Academic development is a very crucial component of the After School Program and degreed/certified staff offer tutoring to youth in areas where they may be academically deficient. Additionally, recreation, socialization skills, positive self-esteem, and character building are promoted in the program.

Tuition-free scholarships for our Youth Development Programs are available for youth ages 6-15.

SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

The Summer Enrichment Program occurs during the summer months. Youth have a daily schedule that provides time for sports and recreation, board games, problem-solving/brain teaser activities, physical fitness, fine arts (which usually includes a drama or musical production by summer’s end), computer lab, and library usage, a book club, motivational speakers, field trips and career exploration.

Youth are provided with lunch and an afternoon snack each day.

Participants' academic skills are enhanced by practices and drills in subjects of the grade level that they have just completed using the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum.

STEM PROGRAM

Ella Austin Community Center incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math into all of its youth programs.

We also offer a year-round Science and Math Academy for qualified eleven- to fifteen-year-olds in partnership with St. Philip’s College, The Center of Excellence for Mathematics, and for Sciences. The academy focuses on fun topics with high-demand careers such as engineering, biotechnology, game design, alternative energy, chemistry, environmental science, and more.

At-risk youth aged 6–14 years of age (elementary –and middle school grades).

Challenger Learning Center Missions immerse students in grades 4-12 into the roles of scientists, engineers and astronauts engaging in our state-of-the-art simulated learning environment. Each 90-minute mission experience is aligns to the state’s TEKS and reinforces the importance of  21st century skills with teamwork, communications and problem solving components within each scenario.  Challenger missions are reserved well in advance by school and community groups. Partnering ISD’s have a period of prioritized registration through September before the calendar is opened to other groups. A single mission costs $500/class of 20-36 students. 

Teachers bringing a group to either a Mission or Micronauts are required to attend a Pre-Mission Training before their program. For more educator information on Challenger Learning Center Missions, training and Reservations go to the Educators page.

The Micronaut Program at Scobee Education Center provides young children age 4 – 9 with an authentic STEM experience as they travel through a simulated mission to the International Space Station. The mission models “Best Practices” in early childhood education that capitalizes on the young child’s natural curiosity to explore and learn about the world they are a part of. By making STEM education a focus of a child’s early education we begin to change the world one class at a time by instilling a lifelong passion to learn about and care for our planet earth. By inspiring and educating young children we contribute to our national goal of a scientifically literate society.

The mission of the Scobee Education Center is to engage our students and community in life-changing experiences that inspire the pathways to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) careers.

Through a therapeutic social network built on cultural foundations, we create spaces for women to connect, share, and support one another. ALAS, SAY Sí’s theatre program, provides students interested in the performing arts with opportunities to develop their skills in acting, directing, playwriting, technical theatre and stage management. Committed to the creation of new and original performance work by, for, and about San Antonio youth, ALAS challenges students to draw from their own experiences, observations, and insights to produce theatre of relevance to their lives and their communities.

ALAS operates as a collaborative ensemble known as the ALAS Youth Theatre Company. In the company, every student’s talent is valued and essential. Students have ownership over their theatrical work, and a voice in the artistic, technical, and creative decisions involved in every aspect of the production process.

Emphasizing leadership skills and civic engagement, ALAS aims to empower youth to create work that addresses community needs and concerns, challenges prejudices and social injustice, and celebrates diversity and difference.

This program is for students in grades 6-11.

SAY Sí’s Media Arts Studio is a creative innovative technology-based learning program that provides a hands-on focus on filmmaking and photography. Throughout the year, SAY Sí students, along with the help of professional staff and established professionals in the media industry, collaborate and produce short films and documentaries. Students have the opportunity to explore and utilize their talents in all phases of the production, from writing the screenplay, scouting film locations, directing or budgeting, to casting, editing, creating an original musical score or working collaboratively on lighting production. Once the film is produced, the students also work on the accompanying marketing of their work in addition to showcasing their movies’ premieres.

This program is for students in grades 6-11.

WAM, SAY Sí’s multidisciplinary middle school program, is a year-round Saturday program in visual arts, theatre, media arts and new media. SAY Sí employs its junior and senior high school students to work as student instructors, allowing for reciprocally beneficial peer-to-peer mentoring.

Classes take place each Saturday throughout the calendar year and focus on long-term individual achievement and skills enhancement. The mentoring between our high school and middle school students is a unique aspect to this program. It gives middle school students the opportunity to learn from some of our advanced high school students and it gives our high school students real-world job skills and experience. Students in this program work on projects that develop cognitive skills, including; problem solving, reasoning, and decision-making as well as interpersonal skills such as oral communication, teamwork and self-fulfillment.

This program is for students in grades 6-8.

The HIVE is the youngest and second-largest SAY Sí studio. There student-artists focus on digital arts, comics, animation, creative coding, game design, new media, transmedia, interactivity, and storytelling through systems.

HIVE challenges youth to think about interactivity, analyze art and new media critically and decide when working collaboratively or working independently are the best modes for getting their ideas across. Students explore new kinds of media and intersections of different media and make anything that they need computers to produce or experience.

In the HIVE students:

• write interactive fiction (choose your adventures)
• design books, card games, and board games
• program big games in Unity3D
• program small games in PICO-8
• make procedural art in Processing (processing.org)

Students study drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and art history with a focus on the development of entrepreneurial and marketing skills. The program’s participants consist of approximately 50 students that attend studio sessions throughout the week that offer creative projects involving a variety of mediums and opportunities to explore and master new techniques.

SAY Sí’s visual arts program aims to provide students projects which involve cultural relevance and a variety of mediums; mentoring, instruction and guidance from staff and visiting artists; entrepreneurial and exhibition opportunities for students to financially benefit from the display and sale of their work; assistance with the development of portfolios, resumes, and applications to art schools, community colleges, and universities, and/or assistance in finding jobs upon graduation from high school.

To be eligible to apply, students must meet the following requirements:

• Parental/guardian permission
• Reliable transportation to and from SAY Sí
• Current enrollment in middle school or high school (public, private, or home school), grades 6-11
• A minimum C average in school
• A commitment to:
• Abide by SAY Sí’s in-person COVID-19 safety protocols, including

MAUC will survey the target audience annually to provide services and educational classes as determined by the family needs. MAUC provides the following services:

• Parent Engagement. Prepares parents in understanding the school system and how they are able to advocate for their children and guide them through their school years all the way to receive a higher education in a college or university.
• G.E.D. Classes. The “General Equivalent Diploma” is for adults 18 years of age and older that have not completed high school. This program prepares the student to take the GED “State Assessment” to acquire an alternative diploma to improve employment possibilities.
• ESL Classes. “English as a Second Language” is a program that supports adult immigrants in learning English to improve their basic language skills and better opportunities for employment.
• Nutrition Education. Nutrition Education assists parent(s) to understand the connection of good nutrition and physical activity such as exercise to promote good eating habits and family wellness.
• Art for Adults. Free art classes for adults are offered to promote creativity and learn techniques in art acrylic painting on canvas.
• Art for Children. Free art classes for children 7-12 years of age are offered to promote creativity, imagination and learn techniques in drawing and painting. Students also work on creative seasonal activities throughout the year.
• Adult Literacy in Spanish. Centro de Estudios provides the opportunity for immigrant parent(s) from Mexico to continue their education in completing their “Primaria” and “Secundaria “so they may receive a “certificate of completion”. The ultimate goal is to assist (parent)s in entering a “G.E.D.” program that is offered in English or Spanish and to continue the parent(s) education in reading, writing and the ability to speak in English.

The San Anto Cultural Arts After School Arts Program provides youth with basic art principles and hands-on techniques that translate into creative know-how and problem-solving skills applicable in school, at home, the workplace, and beyond.

CULTIVATION is our in-house and outreach education program in music, dance and media for youth, senior, and special needs populations, especially those who otherwise would not be able to afford, access nor participate in the arts.

CULTIVATION is a process that nurtures artistic excellence through sequential steps, beginning with exposure to the craft; participation in classes in that craft; and, finally, execution of materials as a completed production.

This is a year-round program, with URBAN-15 arts professionals in the schools, classes and workshops in our studio, and major city-wide concerts. Our programs have served over 10,000 students from 41 schools and community centers.

Armando Camina is a professional media personality in radio, television, and currently the Founder of the nonprofit Hope, Faith, and Dreams based in San Antonio, Texas. With many years of media experience behind him, Armando began writing and publishing in 2012. Through his Foundation Hope, Faith, and Dreams, he collaborates with area Public Schools in an after-school program for the development of literary works by young student authors. Armando uses a series of workshops where students are guided through various topics, challenging them to be imaginative and to think critically.

Dream Kids offers a large variety of themes from object lessons, to plays, to skits, and games in order to teach children valuable lessons to help them grow.

Metro Kids is the community-based portion of the children's program that meets every Saturday during Adopt-A-Block, giving kids a taste of what Dream Kids is all about, but right in their own neighborhood!

The GoodHood Immersions are designed to decrease the distance between people and places.  Many of the problems facing our city are caused by a failure to see one another clearly.

During the Immersion, you will get the opportunity to spend time with new people, in a new place and get a new perspective on the Eastside of San Antonio. After a half-day of walking, talking, and eating, you will not only be able to see people and places differently but you will also be able to decrease the distance that divides us.

Since 2017, The DoSeum has partnered with professional mid-career artists who seek ways to challenge the young curious minds of San Antonio through their art and encourage them to engage with the exhibits through activities that provoke them to think outside of the box. A link for ticket reservations will be posted on this page at 8:00 AM the morning of Free Family Night. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tips for making your visit as enjoyable as possible:

• Check-in will start 15 min prior to Free Family Night to the doors opening.
• Please have your Free Family Night tickets ready for check-in. Digital tickets are preferred.
• Everyone must be present and complete the check-in process to receive a wristband.
• Wristbands guarantee entrance for Free family Night.
• Parking is limited; please plan accordingly.
• No outside food allowed inside The DoSeum.
• Please limit stroller use or use umbrella strollers inside the museum.

The Little DOers Preschool is set in a play-based learning environment and provides hands-on experiences with STEM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), literacy, and the arts. Daily exploration within our stimulating exhibits will support your child's social, cognitive, and physical development to ensure their minds are always growing.
