Our mission is to serve all of God's people no matter who they are. We were founded in 1963.
As a church we have the usual programs, but beyond that we have a community garden where our primary gardeners are refugees resettled in our area and we have a seated Tai Chi class for those of limited mobility and improvement of health. We have also made our facility into a place of outreach for other organizations. We have hosted Rise Recovery and Palmer Drug abuse Program for over 30 years. Catholic Charities offers ESL classes for refugees along with other services here. The Art of Living meets here and we also have a Boy Scout Troop, AA and a Taking Off Pounds Sensibly group.
Quilting - (CURRENTLY ON HOLD) Our Quilters make tied lap quilts to distribute to local agencies. When they have several ready, the quilts are blessed in worship. The group usually meets on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. in the Education Wing. Please call before attending so we can have a quilter ready to meet you.
Art Group- Artists are invited to bring their medium and be creative in fellowship with other artists. All skill levels are welcome. The Art Group meets on Wednesdays at 1:00 p.m. every other week in the Art Room (between the Fellowship Hall and the Education Wing).
Tai Chi Classes (CURRENTLY ON HOLD) originates from China, and consists of a series of slow, flowing movements that are safe and gentle. This class is designed to be practiced seated for those who are unable to stand for long periods but you are also welcome to stand as well. The class is usually on Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. at the Luther House (directly across the parking lot from the church).
CIELO Garden at House of Prayer is a community based partnership involving volunteers, educators and members of San Antonio's resettled refugee community. The gardens are located at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, where the congregation has opened their doors for adult education courses and social services to provide for San Antonio's nearby refugee community through Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Agency and Northside ISD Adult Education Program.
The gardens are a Green Spaces Alliance affiliated community garden that provides for students to have access to their own garden plots, as well as used in conjunction with their English literacy courses. These gardens are purely volunteer operated and funded by donations, a Green Spaces grant, and through the financial support our garden volunteers, families, and friends.
This began as a community garden tended by Refugees mainly and continues to work with refugees. If you are interested in a plot or volunteering in the garden please call Jennifer Alaniz at the House of Prayer Lutheran Church church office.
If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of a mental or behavioral health condition, not having someone to confide in or not knowing how to navigate available resources can make matters even worse.
The Bridges to Care program at House of Prayer Lutheran offers mental and behavioral health support that includes:
- Confidentiality
- A compassionate listening ear
- Help finding educational resources
- Help connecting with professional service providers
- Help connecting with peer and family support groups
Wellness Champions at House of Prayer Lutheran Church have received training from NAMI San Antonio to be companions to those struggling with mental and behavioral health concerns.
Please reach out if you or someone close to you would benefit from their support.
